Yellow is such a flattering color too. smiley - winkeye If we all come back, can we be assured that the Atelier won't implode?

Irv, I was counting in personally.

Apparently, my smiley - cat woke me up today because he wanted the warm spot in the bed. smiley - laugh

I want a new job,
One that won't make me sick,
One that I can enjoy,
One that won't make my head feel 3 feet thick.

GDZ, you know that's one of the songs that he didn't write the melody for, right? The original, "I want a new drug" is just as appropriate, if not more so.

Hello there Ben. Sorry didn't see you there.

Appropriately I've landed a new job today. Remember I said I was going for an interview at Edges? Well I didn't get that one, but they called me back today for a less formal talk and offered me a different job.

And I had absolutely forgotten the yellow romper suit of shame.

Oh well.

Your place of work sounds ... well it sounds *malicious* Gwen.

One idea that came lurching at me out of my studies on organisational behaviour (Dilbert was a set text smiley - rofl) was that US organisations appear to expect more from their employees then UK ones: more commitement, more ambition, more acceptance of grease on the greasy pole, more willingness to eat shit. The American researchers seemed surprised by the idea that employees might not identify with the organisation they worked for body and soul. It was very noticable in the UK individuals can and do identify with their skills first and their employer second. I find myself speculating that this might be because we have had professional and trades groupings for hundreds of years (guilds, unions, royal colleges, professional bodies). The idea that employees might have a sense of self seems to shock the US academics for some reason.

*said with tongue firmly in cheek*

Ben, I do believe that's heretical over on this side of the pond. How dare someone actually think they're worth anything to the organization?! That's...just...wow. How dare an employee think that he or she has anything to contribute to the bastion of capitalism that is the megacorporation? Well, at least until they can backdate stock options!

(here endeth the sarcasm)

You might be right about guilds, etc., although my recollection is that guilds made those at the bottom do the scut work. Hmm. Interesting idea. I just finished Andrew Roach's book on how the rise of guilds went hand and hand with heresy, and I don't know that I buy his supposition that heresy made some people rich because they were part of the 'old boys network' as it were...
