Red, this is a fast moving thread and you and Tocc managed to simulpost each other.
Anyways hello Redpechamthegrate. Welcome to the atelier a synopsys of the type of things talked about can be found on the first posting of the more recent threads (well it's a brief resume of the previous thread), and some additional details are on the page to which the conversation is attached.
Talking politics, while being polite to everyone elses view is one of the things that goes on here, as is some silliness and then there are the various rants and ravings about life. Kinda like what happens between any bunch of friends really.
So come on in and make yourself at home.
PS Don't fear the backlog, it's not THAT scary

Just call me red. I'ts not easy branching out you know. I've even posted a question in 'ask the hootoo" section about this. I'm a thingite and used to giving newcommers a friendly welcome. It seems to be harder to plough fresh furrows on hootoo than real life...

Phil you only say it's fast moving because of the blur as the postings go by.

Perhaps I've a relative on the other side of The Pond.
Anyone know how to combat altitude sickness? Or at least to acclimate to altitudes when you are only exposed to them for brief periods of time? Looks like I will soon be twiddling a knob from 8000' instead of 7200'. The up side to that is that I get to ride a snowmobile to work every day.

Hiya, red! Welcome to the salon.
Just ask Matina the maidbot for the beverage of your choice. There ususally something sweet to be had to nibble on, too.

Marv the only way to acclimatise to altitude is to go there and then stay there. If you do get problems you should go down immediately. Have you talked to your supervisor about your fears in this?
Red I've had a quick look at your page and see you're an artist, what sort of stuff do you do?

Maybe those cans of oxygen that were popular a few years back will help with the altitude. Is it the lack of oxygen that makes you feel wobbly, or the reduction in air pressure? For pressure I would try a decongestant.
Welcome red.

Hi phil and all.
I do sculpture/photograhy and all sorts. I belong to an arts collective group here in south east London UK. I love good conversation and humour. I think I'll slowly feel my way in to this thread. Thank you for your warm welcome......

Got a good 8 hours sleep and am feeling better. Ready to conquer Everest.
I absolutely have to work this morning. Deadlines are upon me! I have a CD that has to be cashed in before it rolls over and I'm the only one who can do it. Plus a statistical report for the state library that I've been trying to do at home, but the password is wonky somehow so I have to go in and call the state library about that. And I can't get anyone to cover for me for the architects/contractors this morning.

Phil, I am not so much afraid or concerned as I am curious. I wonder if I will actually acclimate to the altitude when i am only there for half of the day. It's a 4000' increase (roughly) in elevation from SLC.

Phil Posted Nov 9, 2004
The other side is will your body need to adapt to that extra 4000' (or even the 800' above where you currently work). I would have thought that over time if your body needs to adapt then it will.

I know that my being vastly overweight and out of shape does not help, but last year I was dying when exerting myself at altitude. I am in slightly better shape this year and have seemed to have quit smoking, so things are going a bit better. I still have not done anything physical at altitude.

I've just googled around looking for some info and the FAA regulations are that the cabin of a jet aircraft should be presurised to the equilavlent MAX altitude of 8000' So if you're fine on flights (from an air pressure/oxygen depletion perspective) you should be fine.
At that altitude the air pressure is about 75% of what it is at sea level. Your starting point of 4000' in SLC is about 88% of the sea level air pressure.

Seemed to have quit smoking?
Hi Red - welcome to the Atelier. Phil sums the mood here really well, it seems to be a communal blog, with diversions onto specific subjects when they take our fancy. I consider it to be an online pub, in many ways, and someone, one day, should issue an Atelier cookbook!
How is it that some mornings you get loads and loads done, and other days you get nothing done AT ALL?
Actually, I have got a fair amount done, but none of it planned. My friend C rang me after a very long silence; she had been on my list of people to phone for about a week, so it was good to catch up.
Also, I have a friend in another country who is having problems with possible corruption in the public services. I have finally got him to agree to let me ask a friend of my father's who is an ex-cabinet minister there for advice. It has taken me two months to get him to agree to this, and I hope that the hour I spent crafting the email will help him break what looks as if it might be an impassable deadlock.
It is astonishing when one can draw on the credit of 60 year old favours. Never ever under-estimate the effects of good deeds done in thiw world. Can we raise a G&T in memory of my dad?
Ben

B, ya I seemed to have stopped. It was not a decision or anything, I just stopped when I got sick in August and have not started back up again. I've bummed one off of a friend a couple of times and it about made me sick.
Key: Complain about this post
