Strangley stands in a state of shock in his lounge as it has a proper floor and furniture where it is supposed to be!!!
.
I have screwed some of the floorboards back rather than nailed incase I have to lift them again as easier. I think I will use small screws eventually in the top of flooring as opposed to reglueing as before as glue caused a lot of repairable .damage to top of floor. I shall think about the refixing of top layer of flooring and see how few screws I can get away with as will be noticed.
I shall have to leave it a week or so to see how effective the noise insulation really is as a too soon judgement might be based on over expectation or disappointment, however as said I am now thinking in percentages of reduction not total silence. If it isn't as good as I hoped and I find some wonder insulation in future that will be better I will be able to lift flooring quicker and easier than before due to using srews not nails this time nor glue.
.
I would be happy if I just get a bit of voice removal so that Mr Loud Voice actually sounds like he is in the downstairs flat and not infront of my face.

I was in an accident a bit over 2 hours ago. I am physically fine, not going to say how I am mentally. My car is being towed to a body shop tomorrow where an adjuster will look at it. The radiator is gone, not sure on the engine but it wouldn't turn over after the accident. Not sure what I am going to do at this point.

Yes, I just got the car at the end of July. I am covered, I have a $500 deductible to pay for repairs (assuming it is not totaled which I hope it is not, I would take a big loss if it is). I just liquidated what little I has in my retirement, will get about $150, and will have to talk to the Pastor at church about potential help with the rest.
Kids will be home soon, have to explain the situation to them next.

It's weird, really. My eyes are itchy, my nose is stuffy, and my apartment is even stuffier.
And yet, at the same time, there is a part of me that wonders if perhaps, just perhaps, these fires aren't reminding SoCal folks that nature really *is* more powerful than money. Many of the houses that are burning are those belonging to people with more money than sense.

I know what you mean, MR. The thing is, they'll just rebuild in the same place, a lot like the people who get flooded out all the time, and then rebuild, and sometimes get flooded out *again.* The insurance for those rebuilds, whether fire or flood, will come out of the taxpayer's pocket, though, as most insurance companies won't cover the new homes. Makes you wonder, doesn't it, why we have to foot the bill for people who have more money than the average person to begin with?
My area has been smoky as well, and I've been coughing a lot, and I'm not as close to the fires as you are, MR. Closest one to me is Santa Clarita. The fire season is one thing I won't miss about SoCal.

for GDZ. Hoping for a not-particularly-totalled car.
When I was growing up in the mountains, we often had forest fires. I remember two scary ones that came close to the house, the entire hill above us being a rising wall of flame, and the tractor, left in the upper field, untouched by the fire per se, having its tires burst in the heat. Looking at pictures of California I felt the same sick fear all over again.
On the other hand, I was highly, bitterly, amused by a news item this morning comparing the free-massage-and-acupuncture, live music, refugee experience going on in California's stadiums to the Katrina debacle. I am hoping it's a lot to do with People in Charge having learned something from Katrina, and not just because the victims this time are better off and kinda shiny-teethed.

Sorry about the car accident.
.
I don't get this at all and I know I said I wouldn't make a quick judgment but the noise seems to be exactly the same as before I can here his voice and every word clearly and kid screaming, it is 7.45am and they have put the kid's DVD on again, I simply don't understand it I have used the highest possible density insulation in the densist boards, the stuff that the professional soundproofers use as spoke to them. It would appear I have wasted around £500 and two weeks of hard work.
......all I have to show for it is aching hands, ankles and lots of cuts and bruises!

I forgot to add that I tested the insulation materials by putting a mechanical clock in a box and covering with layers of insulation to check on improvement and each layer stopped a little more noise so it wasn't untested so I don't undrstand it at all.

Good to hear you seem to have got out of the accident OK GDZ, lets hope the car isn't a write off.
Not sure what to recomend at all Strangley as it's something I have no experience of.

I know, I don't know either. The problem is I really don't see what I can do under floorbaord wise as it is full up. Concrete or something really heavy is out due to weight clearly.
The only possible way is extra heavy covering above floor boards and although I really don't want to do that it may be the only option although at least it won't mean lifting the floor boards again clearly it will cost more though.
This has totally ruled out any sort of putting insulation up for Mr DIY upstairs since it clearly won't work since if there has been any benefit from all that work it has been barely noticeable. Extra insulation through extra carpet underlay, etc above my floor boards might perhaps absorb some noise and stop some of the echoing of sound from below.
.
Sadly when I had the floorboards up I thought each extra layer of insulation stopped a little more noise but perhaps I was misled due to the floorboards being up and it being extra noisey. I think I expected everything to improve greatly when all the floor was back to normal but sadly that is not the case. I really don't want to hear every detail of his phone calls and wish him and child would leave to be honest as not sure I would want to live here anymore if I can't stop noise despite the hassle of selling flat but with two noisier neighbours it does take away the joy of living somewhere that was reasonably peaceful before.
I can't lift all floor to put thicker underlay everywhere as would me a massive amount of work and mean having to cut off the bottom of every door in flat again as flooring would be higher so would do just lounge again.
