There's a movie out in American theaters now without a plot but a whole lot in the way of torturing the female lead. Yesterday I read one of the (naturally scathing) reviews and in my mind it's all blah, blah, torture porn, blah blah, miscogyny I know terrible, blah, blah, WAIT, HER DOG IS KILLED!?

"Variable Star" is not part of a series, and stands alone quite nicely by itself, so you don't really have to wait to read it if you don't want to. I read it earlier this year and quite enjoyed it. But I am a die-hard Heinlein fan. . .

Glad to hear you survived the surgery well, Agapanthus. smiley - rose Get well soon. The trapped CO2 will eventually go away. I had a client who went through that pain and was also surprised at how bad it was.

Ag, been there with that referred shoulder pain...ouch!

I have to get up at an ungodly hour of the morning tomorrow to catch the train to Santa Barbara. But I'm still looking forward to the trip!

Oh, I know it stands alone--by waiting I meant saving it until I finished my other library books for the week (by other authors entirely). I'm a diehard Heinlein fan too *is itching to get to upack books so she can read _Tramp_Royale_ again*

Teuchter you've got to spill the beans on the Granite City. I lived there for 12 years and have still got lots of friends there. Please, pretty please.

On the subject of books, I wondered what people thought of this story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6294670.stm

Basically the Commission for Racial Equality is calling on booksellers, notably Waterstones and Borders, to not stock Tintin in the Congo due to the somewhat un-PC portrayal of the natives. Personally I'm with the stores - they've taken the book out of the children's section, but refuse to stop selling it. This is a point where I think adults should be allowed to make up there own minds as to what they want to see.

STRANGELY STRANGE ( A brain on a spring )

I think the CRC were the ones who has a sexual discrimination case bought against them due to paying women differant wages, which would be irronical. I think it is them or a group doing similar work, Pot calling the kettle black comes to mind.

With the stores my self..re refusing to stop stocking it [[A spokeswoman said the book contained "words of hideous racial prejudice, where the 'savage natives' look like monkeys and talk like imbeciles"]] though do think its in the eye of the beholder if it is or not, " most kids act racist/fatist/foureyedist. A lot of the time anyway when growing up, with or without reading material, and will be using other derogatory terms, to me the actions and demeanour need to be present not just the words...

Does that mean kingsley/dickens will suffer the same fate next for advocating cruelty to children along with smiley - biggrin"bourgeois, paternalistic stereotypes of the period

Cats: George has just gone out, after being in all night (and after eating, natch) and Charlie has just come in, after being out all night (and fallen asleep on the chair beside me) he must have eaten elsewhere, what a surprise!

Mol, our HPs haven't been delivered yet. I expect they'll come in Monday. At least I hope they do. It takes a while to process them. We've had a lot of requests to be put on the hold list. However, there is no actual way to put them into my circ system's hold queue until they are cataloged and have barcodes. So I have a makeshift list. Good old pencil and paper. Large libraries generally have circ software sophisticated enough to list books on order. Technically, mine will do that, but it still won't let us place holds on a title without a barcode. It's more trouble than it's worth.

I ordered 6 print copies and one unabdridged audio.

WA - the teuchter-noire stylee books to which I referred are by Stuart McBride.
The first one is "Cold Granite" and the second "Dying Light". I believe there's a third out in hardback - but I'll be waiting for the paperback. They're fairly decent police procedural thrillers - with a high body count and loads of gore.

Far aboots in Aiberdeen did you bide?

Dear me. Back from a week in the great Swedish outdoors, having too much rain, too little sleep and generally a fab time of it all.

(you do not want to know how many typos I've corrected already - I am *dead* tired!)

All worth it though - at the evaluation yesterday, after all the detailed discussions, we asked them to overall rate the summer camp on a 1 - 10 scale. We got 8 - 14 smiley - biggrin

There is nothing in the world to compare with the utter exhaustion at the end of a camp. It's like moving house and having a week-old baby and having permanent toothache *combined*.

Only brilliant.

Go and have a nice warm bath, that always helps after camping, especially if it's been wet. Glad they all enjoyed it though.

Garden is coming along-it's on the really fiddly bit where I have to remove the rubbish, including long rooted dandelions from around the 'proper' plants.

But I'm heading to the local hostelry soon smiley - stout
