Afgncaap5, any of us who know would be happy to show you (or anybody else for that matter)

I can never remember, but can't you type test instead of U in the address of a page, to see how folk do stuff?

Courtesy, I have a real problem with bad manners, it costs nothing to consider others, but so many have a "I'm happy so tough to every one else" attitude.

I agree, the cinema is often an issue for me, it's not just 'kids' talking through films, but folk that are more than old enough to learn a few manners.

There is nothing more irritating in an online forum than reading arguments that go round and round in circles with a small number of posters trying to score points and get in the last word.

I have said everything that I feel the need to say on the subject of the BBC's legal rights to call the shots on its own websites, starting in 2001. I have been saying the same things for almost three years, goddess help us all...

I am therefore going to shut up on the subject in this thread.

I hereby apologise to the other Salonistas for continuing and extending the argumentative tone of posts here.

Ben
(The next post will be the fluffy one).

This has everything to do with survival. Manners are for civilisation. Civilisation adopts tolerance to others.

I agree with you too, Courtesy. I've found that it is not just teenagers or kids talking through movies, but older adults who should know better, or at least provide a better example. For instance, when I went to see Return of the King last weekend a teenage girl and her parents sat next to me. The entire time, the three of them--not just the kid--commented on various plot points and asked the inevitable annoying questions aloud ("Who's that?" "What's that?" "Where are they going?") I gave the mother and father A Look, but to no avail. When I saw The Pianist a year ago, it was two old ladies behind me. They weren't deaf, they just wanted to announce every scene ("She's playing the cello!" "He's starving!" "They're going into the room!") They got A Look and shushed to boot, and were mightily peeved by it.

The best remedy I've heard of was from an article in Entertainment Weekly on how to stop others from talking in movies. Lean over or forward (if they're nearby) and whisper in the offender's ear: "Do you know how much I can get for your kidney on the black market if you don't be quiet?" smiley - evilgrin

Toc -

I have actually sat next to a person who not only got a phone call in the theater, they proceeded to answer it and then hold a conversation. I'm generally a nice, quiet person, but I told that person that they needed to either shut up or leave.

One of the best ways to learn how to use GuideML is to see how other Researchers have done it. If you would like to see what the GuideML looks like in entries, simply type in the URL http:// www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/Test123456 where 123456 is the A number of the entry you wish to view the GuideML for. The A number can be found in the 'entry data' box in the top right hand corner of each entry.

So, for this entry, A308279, you'd look at http:// www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/Test308279 (remembering to leave out the letter 'A').

If you want to look at the GuideML for someone's Personal Space, then type in the URL http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/ TestUserPage123456 where 123456 is the U number of the Researcher you wish to view the GuideML for.

It's not just by making noise that you can ruin a film - the way you react can too. The Blair Wich Project was ruined for me because of people laughing all the way through it...

In Shrek, I congratulated the parents of two 6/7(?) year olds alongside me who had behaved wonderfully throughout the film. Unlike the teanagers in the row in frontsmiley - sadface

If you complain when things are not right, yu have to congratulate when they are, to balance it out.

Courtesy, you're on to something. I think it has always been like this but now that there are so many of us on the planet it's almost impossible to stay away from dominant, rude people. They act that way because they have no self control and think they don't have to have control or humility.

Sad thing is, life has a way of catching up with people like that.

I've been meaning to read about Japan's tradition of respect, honor, and 'face'.

Courtesy, I think it also has to do with attention span. For the last 25 years or so, I have chosen not to have a TV (although I have had one for the last year, but now only use it to watch DVD's). In that time, I have noticed the the films I see have noticably increased their pace. By that I mean that they cut between scenes more often, the "thrills" happen much more frequently, and dialogue and character development are much reduced. I've noticed this on the TV, too, when I did start watching it again. Expecially commercials - sometimes images go by so fast that individual images hardly register.

Anyway, I think that what has happened is that people got used to the old pace of things, so movie/TV producers had to speed up the pace to keep people's interest. This was progressive and imperceptable to most people, unless you were out of the loop for a while. The end result is that now, people expect a thrill per second, and if the movie has slower , quieter parts where the movie makers try to get in at least a little character development, people get bored and start talking to their neighbour.

Very weird. the frame on the right says that Z posted after Toc, for 2019. Yet no matter how many times I refresh, it doesn't come up.

Courtesy, I find the same thing. I don't think it's as much of an issue elsewhere as it is here, however, when even small children have their own cell phones. I'm sorry, but anyone under 14 shouldn't have a cell phone, and their parents should know where they are at ALL TIMES. But I digress. It's one thing to turn to your viewing companion and say, "I'd like to see that," or "Oh, not another movie with Leonardo DiCaprio" during the previews, but once the feature film comes on, unless you are on fire, you should be quiet. You should also not assume that is okay to put your feet on the seat in front of you, and for heaven's sake, why can't most folk be bothered to take their popcorn cups with them and throw them away?

I tend to avoid movie theatres, except in the middle of the day. For one, I can't afford evening movie prices, and for two, I get really frustrated with the people.

I have had to sush the Stepson talking in the theatre, (real live theatre with actors). Mind you, it was the pantomime. I have also had to lean forward and ask the people in front to be quiet during the ballet.

Yes, VCRs have affected how people behave in cinemas and theatres.

Went into town and blew a small fortune on clothes for the Stepson. Got some serious bargains though: two pairs of trousers and seven tops, (shirts, t-shirts and sweatshirts) from Primark for thirty five quid. We spent much more serious money on other things. But the main point is that the boy now has enough clothes, though we still have problems with shoes. He has size 15 feet, and high street stores go up to size 13, so I am going to go on an Internet Quest.

My daughter and I go to kids' movies, where you expect a little more noise, and I'm okay with a certain level of behavior in that arena. Little ones can't sit still that long. But even in a kid movie, if your kid starts screaming, be nice and take them out.

I think, Courtesy, that this is part of the larger problem of a lack of manners. Cell phones in theatres, dangerous speeding on the freeway...

I can't tell you how shocking it is to me that no one besides myself lets people with one or two items ahead of their full grocery carts at the store. When I tell someone with a loaf of bread to go ahead of my full cart, they look at me, and often ask if I'm sure. Well of course I'm sure! You've got one thing, I have a hundred. To me, that's just common decency.

Tv the staus of this has been transfered as to the main imformation giver as was the newspaper of previous generations, this i feel is reflected by the content's everchangeing style of presentation.
That is where as 30-50 years ago events over certain distences where generly discussed grom reports in next days papers T.V was still relatively new.

There is a plus side to parents cell phone argument is it is a very good ideah if they have one
god forbid they get lost GPS information transmitted by thes phones give position. They can be programed to only let certain nos in/out connections.
