Therma-rest mattresses are the business, even if they are heavier than closed cell foam mat.

It's hot. I'm an English . I don't *do* heat, lovely though it is. I feel guilty about enjoying aircon.
It's all been a bit dramatic today, hasn't it?
By the way, jeauamne - Curly will nip if I don't stroke him exactly right. He likes having the backs of his ears rubbed, if I get it wrong and put my hand near the front of his face or under his chin he nips. It's the equivalent of a tap on the back of the wrist for someone who can't say "oy, behind the ears please, not under the chin".
Mostly.
I certainly wouldn't waterspray a cat who nipped me for petting it in the wrong way. That way neurosis lies.
Has your mother kept cats before?

Just reading the backlog. I seem to have missed the hyphen debate.
Amy - The position of the backslash. On this one it's just above the enter key, which is rectangular instead of being a funny shape. Anyhow, I kept hitting it instead of enter.\\\\\ Mind you, I've had more than one keyboard arrangement in the UK.
Here in Webb City so far we have Xantief, Spy, Lady Chattingly, and myself and Hyp of course.

That's a good size for a conversation group. More than 8 and you start getting several conversations at once.
There was something else I was going to say.

I can never find the backslash on Windoze machines anyway. On the Mac it's right next to the carriage return. Is Return what we're calling Enter here? The other keys I can never find on peecees are the vertical line |, @ and ".
Mind you, I'm using an extended converted Spanish keyboard. ~ causes confusion. It appears where you would expect the | to be but it actually types a ± sign. The ~ is created by doing alt - n - space
Strange but true.
I would have loved to have joined in the festivities at Webb City but I knew all along that the job/moving thing would come to a head around now.

Jealous of excessive heat. Trying to enjoy excessive cold and drizzle.
But it's true, we're not used to any kind of heat, aircon is lacking in this country. I do miss my old car which had aircon when driving on a hot day.
special characters is right. If I set up my keyboard to British, all of the "s @s and things aren't where the keys tell me.

Amy, the macs we have are sort of US keyboard layout (ie things like @, ", | etc are moved) but they also have £ in the right place - shift-3
This has caused me to have to show academics how to type... (don't ask about me then showing them how to get cds in and out of the machine).
Have fun in Webb City, it would be nice to be there, truly it would.
Lil, is there nowhere else nearby where you might get back into doing some horse work. You sound like you really enjoy it.

Hyp, I predict that you're going to have an absolute blast this holiday, indoctrinating hootooers to the Way of the Hillbilly!
Be sure to post a report on the ghost- hunt -- enquiring minds want to know (particularly if you've been sampling Lady C's wine, first)!
*very sad not to be there...*

Hope you're all having fun in Webb City
The cat was very friendly today (went to mum's for dinner), he really wanted to be stroked, and settled on my lap for a bit, and finished the evening sitting between me and Andy on the sofa.

Affy isn't here yet and neither are broelan and Psychocandy. But, someone left 3 messages on my cell phone that I can't retrieve. I hope we don't have someone stranded on the road or something.
Minerva and Annie are doing great. No one has even caught a glimpse of the other cats.
It is dreadfully hot. The women are inside where it is cool and the men are outside sweating. I think that's fair.

That sounds like it's just the way it should be, Hyp. I just wish I could have escaped this place and made it up there. Please give everyone
for me.

Hypatia, if you don't do ANYTHING else during the holiday, please take pictures of Affi. Inquiring minds are slavering to find out the truth at last.
I had an email from Garius Lupus today. He's very busy! But it was good to read his voice.
Today I got Blind Callie to sit in my lap. And I remember what I wanted to say earlier -- Vinnie doesn't like being touched anywhere on his stomach. If I venture "down there" he takes firm hold of my hand in three-eighths-inch long fangs for a few beats, and if I persist he simply leaves.

Lil, Blind Callie must trust you a lot -- being off the ground she has memorized must disorient her a little. As for Vinnie, I'd leave his tum alone, then!
Sorry to hear about the horses; maybe the owners will let you visit? Or was their care a source of additional income?
Have a marvelous 4th, everyone!

Eliot does the same thing, Lil - unless he's in the mood to get his stomach rubbed. I never can tell what's going to happen when I try. He does, however, like getting his paws rubbed. He's the only one of all the cats I have known or been owned by to enjoy that. But it does make trimming his claws easier.
