Well having opened a case with the great stan of networking, it seems that they are quite good at it (but then someone mentioned the several thousands of emails the tech support at cisco get each day).

Can I now make the big size kaledescope then as Zeppo's a smiley - dog rather than a now smiley - smiley

Lonnytunes - Winter Is Here

Marv, back in the 60s, in NZ, I was at the forefront of the exciting new industry that grew up around TV. I worked for a company that sold and installed TV sets and outside arials when they became generally available and affordable to the great unwashed. When the TVs broke down, as they often did in the early days, we used to repair them.

I was known as "the guy that gets up on the roof". Going along with Qw7en's theory, I guess I should have insisted on being called a "television installation and maintenance engineer". smiley - bigeyes

See? I think that you have the proper title there... I mean when I was the delivery boy and setup guy at Computer City (thankfully now defunct) I was entitled On site technician. I know that many people with degrees hate the term Comptuer(Network) Engineer but that is what we call ourselves. OP what did you require a support call for?

*odd mumblings about donald trump, and bozo the clown can be heard, between the odd giggle and snort, as sporky continues on like so. inspecting the floor, one can clearly see a fine trail of blue powder, quite dry, weaving between the furniture to sporky's collapsed self. there is no hint of phlog about sporky, though there is a fine sapphire blue powder around his cufflinks, and a bit of sparkle in his hair*

It's for a strange little modem problem we've got. The engineer has said he thinks he's seen it before. If you want more info mail me and I'll let you know.

Today I'm doing something slightly pointless. I'm going to go and collect something I've bought but have been told not to use for at least a couple of months smiley - sadface

Historicaly many of those who are now regarded as the great engineers, didn't have university educations, they had learnt their skills "on the job".

I tend to define the difference between a technician and an engineer in terms of their abilities, there are some people who hold very good qualifications but just don't have the right mind set for engineering and are not very practical, while there are others who have very little in the way of formal qualifications who are brilliant at what they do.

OP I will take a shot in the dark and guess it to be an Access Server issue, but I am clueless with those. ASynch is not my forte. Give me a firewall and some juicy access lists any day.

Bloke, I tend to agree with you on that (perhaps because I have no formal edu and I am fairly good at what I do). Anyone can jockey a keyboard with their MCSE (minesweeper conslutant solitare expert) and pretend they know what a network is. The problem of underqualified Lusers with certs is legion in Utah. We have dozens of tech training schools and I know a few of the teachers, they are not that good. I have exactly one cert ATM but I could test out four or five more (All cisco,go fig) with ease. But it is hard to find work here anymore after a ton of layoffs from the likes of Novell and Caldera. Admin jobs are nearly non-exsistant and security admin jobs require exp in stuff I have never played with. Anyone got a spare Sun box that they do not need? That is the only reason I stay where I am. There are jobs to be had in Calif but the cost of living is *far* too high, Houston but I do not think that I would agree with the climate. I am nearly ready to go be a night tech at some firm just to keep my hand in on the PC side. I have noticed that my skills in that area have rusted greatly. Perhaps some time in the saddle again would help. It would be a shame to lose my email addy tho, I like the fear it strikes into the hearts of ISPs when I call for help with my account. I always ask them to cc my work addy and then I get to listen to them squirm.... I love that... I guess I am a BOFH at heart .. Today at work was amazingly slow as noone was in the office preceding the long weekend. I guess people do not like to screw up their networks before a hol. I cannot say as I blame them but I was to the point of stretching a call today to two hours just to relieve the bordom. I would have taken all the high pri cases (which usually suck dead weasles through lint clogged dryer hoses) just to be doing something more than reading old usenet articles from alt.sysadmin.recovery <Note to moderator, that is not a URL)

On another note, tonight my hockey team begins the final round of the playoffs against the NJ Devils. I ahve invited a few friends over to watch the game on the big screen. Fun will be had (assuming that we win) and beer will be drunk. Loony, just in case you are laying odds, I am for Colorado in 6 games for the series. I was able to find the programe from a game I went to in 1990 for the now defunct Salt Lake Golden Eagles and I have my SLGE comemerative mini goalie stick. I will also be wearing my beloved Avalance hat and will have all my pucks arrayed on my coffee table. I only wish that I was in Denver tomorrow so I could see the game in person. Hopefully next season I can take time off in the winter to go see a game. G7, let me know if you ever get tickets for the Finals. For any one interested the NHL has a site that you can see the game's action slightly delayed. Not as good as the live game but it helps. They also stream it live in audio. From 6:00 p.m. on I shall be planted in front of the TV watching the game and hopefully cheering not groaning. One of the stars for the Av's, Peter Forsberg, is out after his spleen burst in the last game of the second series. The man tried to skate today to see if he could play. That is the level of competition that the Stanley Cup brings to the ice. Please wish the Avalanche (or the Devils if you *must*) good luck in their game tonight. I know that I will be.

Sorry for the long rantish post. It is 0400 and I am still wide awake and more than a little exahusted.

When last I chatted with her over IM (yesterday) she seemed fairly busy. One hopes she makes it back to the Atelier soon to see the resolution of all the gniklat sdrawkcab. I am glad that Zeppo smiley - dog in all his omnicient powers was able to reverse the effects of the Phlog. I am also glad that my mirror idea worked to an extent. I think that I shall have a sip of Phlog now.

Asteroid Lil - Offstage Presence

*Arrives after a long day of RL distraction to find the gardener bot discreetly picking up large bones scattered around the veranda, obviously with a view to grinding them up for fertilizer... Mindspring is on the flagstone steps doing imitations of Fred Astaire... a strange mirrored contraption sits roughly in the middle of the conversational group like an escaped Guggenheim internee, and Sporky appears to be losing bone mass*

*And a small green runner extends from the base of Violets' barrel to the base of the phlog barrel. Violets herselves is swaying like undersea kelp*

--uoy ees I ,lleW *starts coughing*

Dang! My friends, over-educated though they may be, certainly know how to have interesting times. Gardener bot -- please consider yourself named Franklin from now on -- could you keep an eye on Springie's whereabouts please? When she runs down she's going to fall asleep wherever she is.

Affi and Chris, good luck on your exams, and happy partying, Affi. I hope the writing is still going well! Chris, have a good time in Nottingham.

Mike Quorthon Atkin sends you all his love! He has his mock exams coming up in just a few weeks, too, and he and his family are planning a trip to Iceland this summer. The only black spot in his life right now is the cancellation of the Guns n Roses concert that he was going to attend -- one of the band members is having cerebral hemhorrages. Meanwhile, he's doing a lot of fanfic writing and has pretty well moved on from furry animation to anime.

Now then, if there is anything worse than a profligate substance consumer, it's a sloppy profligate substance consumer. I hope it was the cannister Sporky pinched and not the sax or the rest of us won't see any blue powder till Christmas...

*thinks* And if he's been spilling it then the bots are at risk, especially Chloe. *grabs Franklin's yard broom and begins sweeping up blue powder from around the supine Sporky* Hmm, I need to find Styx.

Give me a few minuutes to set this right, Looney -- I have some thoughts about your earlier remarks concerning computer techies!

*inflates a VPB around Sporky to quarantine him*

Hmmm. We did make rather a mess yesterday, didn't we?

I'm just off shopping IRL. Then I'm going to work at tidying up the Natural History Museum. Several exhibits died during Rupert and I have to dispose of the bodies. smiley - sadface

Is there a section on parasites, do you have any tics or lice in the museum? next to them I would say.

The fleas, German or otherwise, I can place within the taxonomy. They're insects. but it's the omylice that are bothering me. Are lice insects? I suspect not.
