This is a very odd film, shot in deserted, sepia toned streets and the over-stuffed interiors of early 20c St Petersberg. Every shot is composed to perfection, with many of the characters resembling the subjects of August Sander’s staggering photographs of citizens of Wiemar Germany. It’s a fairly mystifying film which forges Kafkaesque links between spanking, siamese twins, music hall, cinematography and trains: a sort of very leisurely montage of evil - with an extravagant and idiosyncratic use of sound to match its startling visuals. Its occasionally grimly funny but its visual force is what remains most strongly in the mind.
