Big Ming Campbell had all the charisma of a slightly sprouting potato. I mean this in an entirely non-ageist, non-offensive way - I'm sure he's a lovely guy - but he was a bad politician. He didn't inspire, so he had to go. It wasn't because society automatically deems anyone over the age of 50 past it - quite the opposite in 'higher' professions such as the field of politics, the civil service, the judiciary etc. which are dominated almost entirely by the over-45s.
Us Average Joes probably have a bit more difficulty finding a new job when we're past the age of 50, but if we're good at what we do - emphasis on good as opposed to frightfully boring - society doesn't automatically dismiss us.
