Macedonia was always seen as one of the lesser states (iirc) until Phillip decided to get it into gear.

Gnomon's right of course that it's a bit of an anachronism to refer to Greece as a political whole at this point in history. It wasn't a country, agreed, but there were some similarities throughout Greece regarding race, culture, and language.
While the Macedonians did speek a form of Greek, it sounded so strange and foreign to other Greeks that they occassionally referred to the M. as barbarians.

Anyway, my main point wasn't about Macedonia being Greek, I can see your reasons for including it, though I wouldn't myself. My main issue was with calling Macedonia a city state, which I'm fairly sure it wasn't.

Gnomon - time to move on

Remove the header "Introduction". Every h2g2 entry starts with an introduction, so there is no need for this header.

Your GuideML is non-standard, so it needs a bit of tidying up.

1. Use Headers rather than Subheaders.

2. Put and around paragraphs, rather than using at the end of paragraphs.

Well, it looks pretty much done to me...

The only things I saw while reading: 'Libyian' in 2nd paragraph of Post-Macedonia; '...realm right upto the borders of India.' obviously, 'up to'.

Secretly Not Here Any More

"Right up to more recent historical events such as the Battle of Waterloo, regiments of soldiers armed with long thrusting weapons called Pikes saw limited use against cavalry and mounted formations, but these formations bore little resemblance to the phalanx."

Check http://www.napoleonguide.com/weapinf.htm

The only pike armed troops in the Napoleonic wars were Sergeants, who would use them to defend the standards from enemy cavalry. As far as regiments go, there were only 4 types of armament; Muskets for the vast proportion of infantry, Rifles for a few elite British regiments, swords for cavalry brigades, and the cannons of the artillery regiments. I'd double check the sources for any 'regiments' or even single companies armed with pikes. Pikes were never deployed in great numbers as the forming of 'squares' with bayonets fixed would drive away cavalry. Pikes were only given to single men in each formation, as far as I can see.

I'd be skeptical about "regiments of soldiers armed with long thrusting weapons called Pikes" at Waterloo (or even in the Penninsular wars) until you can show me a source.

See i wasnt too sure about that, but there were people who wanted referances to later battles so i picked out water loo. Having seen this, ill revert it to the english civil war, were pike units were deployed

That's more like it. You could say that by the time of waterloo they'd been relegated to symbols of rank...

you sure they had pikes though? seems a clunky weapon for an officer. Sure it wasnt a pole arm or a billhook?

It was a thin pike, slightly thicker than a broomstick, with a brass 'arrowhead' on it, with a small crossbar under the actual head of the pike, from what I've seen in illustrations. More of a long spear than a pike really.

So it was just a simple pole arm then. Not worth mentioning really

Ill make the changes sometime tonight

I've seen this Entry here for quite some time and it's gone from good, to better, to excellent.smiley - biggrin However one thing lets it down IMHO. The title. It sounds clumsy. How about something like "The Phalanx - A history." or " The Phalanx - Genius of Warfare" or even just "The Phalanx - An overview." Or you could leave it the way it was, seems sometimes a little too much suggestion can ruin a piece of work. Too many cooks some might say...Hope it gets recommended soon so we can see the other Entries you mentioned A.

I think you can actually link to an entry in PR as long as it looks like it'll make the edited guide pretty soon. SO you should be ok linking to this if you want to start your other entries. Can't see this staying here very much longer.
