Nice one! One suggestion: perhaps you should also explain how the phalanx was for a long time the only really effective defense against cavalry (well, except for more cavalry that is..).

I thought about it a lot, but it didnt really have a place in the peice without sounding like it was speaking down to the reader. Hopefully most people will realise that they were so effective was because of the fact that they were big long sticks to keep cavalry away etc etc.
