h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Well, from what I know about the plague, it's spread by flea bites from infected rats. Black rats, actually. If you reduce one population, you reduce the risk of an epidemic. So, everyone in the city needs to start taking regular baths, or we can find a way to get rid of the rats. Preferably both.

Since we might be dealing with a plague outbreak here, we are going to need healers. I think I'll take you up on that offer.

*Suddenly, she begins to look slightly ill.* Erm... High Lord Craxus, I don't believe you should be near me right now. The plague is extremely dangerous to humans, because once the victim falls ill, he is extremely contagious, spreading the plague through water droplets in the air when he coughs or sneezes. And the first man I met here coughed on me.

I'll take you up on being a healer, if I live that long.

Lady Lumien...maybe you can summon up an animal that can go and kill the rats to rid the cause of the disease. I'll see about getting one of the elementalists out here to cast a rainstorm to cause a big cleaning. Maybe that should be the trick.


I will also try to and teach you the magic so you can help these people. For now while it seems you are taking ill, I'll see what I can do to help.


*The High lord places his hand onto her forehead and closes his eyes.*

*The High Lord sends a purge of energy to Lady Lumien...hopefully it was enough.*


How do you feel?

*smiles* Thank you. I was starting to worry for a minute, but you had better take care of yourself as well.

Chandra can help with the rats, and I think I can manage other birds of prey, some cats, and some snakes for the sewers. I may need help, though. This is the first real test of my abilities, and I want to make sure I can handle it.

*glances at fading blue shield.* How long do you think this shield will last?

*Craxus rumages around his robes.*

*Craxus hands her a little trinket.*


This thing can protect you from disease and poison...If you need some assistance I can try and help as much as im here...but you could also ask your fellow Caretakers..especially Lord Lycan...your commanding magician. The trinket will only work on one of you so you best try to find someone who can cast a resisting disease/poison spell.

Well, this will keep me safe... *pulls small leather bag out from under her tunic, places trinket inside, and conceals it again.* ...and that should keep it safe.

*Chandra dives for an unseen rodent as Lumien begins to summon various rat-hunting creatures. Finds it easier than she expected.*

You know what, High Lord, I think I can handle this by myself. They probably need you back at the Guild anyway. I should be along shortly for my first lesson in healing.

*bows*

*Ignatius swoops down flapping his wings. Craxus hops up onto his neck.*

*Lumien waves as Ignatius flies off. She turns and notices the small crowd gathered watching the dragon fly off.*

Well, so much for a low profile.

*She turns and walks away from the crowd, further down the side street, to finish her summoning in peace. The various snakes, cats, and birds of prey scatter from the alley to begin the hunt.*

*A few hours later, Lumien finishes with her task, and watches the last of the black rat snakes slither into the sewer.*

That should at least take care of the rat problem. Nice, I don't even have to stick around to take care of them. They're just doing what comes naturally.

*Chandra swoops down, and lands on a nearby gutter. Lumien turns to face her, but stumbles a little.*

Whew! That took more out of me than I thought. What do you say we head home, eh girl?

*Lumien begins the long walk back toward the Magicians Guild, with Chandra flying close behind.*

*Polonius walks into the courtyard and leans against a wall waiting for someone*
