A Conversation for Talking Point: Do Looks Matter?

When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? Not really, no. I bought into the whole “you got to be thin to be pretty” ideal when I was young and I am having a hard time shifting it, even now I am an adult.

Who would you describe as beautiful? Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Sandra Bullock, Angelina Jolie.

Is beauty in the eye of the beholder? Yes. I think my husband is beautiful (in a masculine, manly way!) but I know others do not think that.

Do you think we place too much emphasis on looks these days? I think twas ever thus to be honest with you. I think there is more superficiality than there was previously, but that has more to do with our modern throw away, celebrity-centric, spend what you like and never pay for it culture than anything else.

What do you consider to be your best and worst features? My best feature is my button nose (triumph of genetics, if nothing else!) and maybe my blue eyes. Worst feature, everything from the neck down!!

Would you rather date someone ugly with a personality or someone good-looking with no personality? Definitely the personality and “interesting looking”! They will have more depth and much more prospect of intellectual debate and enjoyable conversation.

Do you think we need more programmes like Ugly Betty on television, which don't feature a glamorous protagonist? No. I think Ugly Betty is a cynical twist of a stereotype. I have never watched it, nor do I wish to watch it.

Does beauty always equate with happiness? Good Lord no! Just like having all the material things you have ever wanted does not equate to happiness either. Look at Marilyn Monroe – beautiful, sexy, had the world at her feet and major league depression to boot.

What one thing would you change about the way you look, if you had the chance? I would lose the extra poundage I am carrying about (and there is plenty of it!) - And I am currently doing something about that.

Do I like what I see in the mirror? that would depend on the day I'm looking..My self-esteem tends to fluctuate from very low to notthat good. In general though I reckon I'm pretty uglysmiley - reindeer. Does it matter? yes and no..for instance I'm heavier than I've ever been but also more comfortable with myself at the same time smiley - weird and definitely happier in my personal life. I would opt to be prettier/thinner if I could though...and ohh to have hips and a bum smiley - tongueout

Rains - Wondering where time's going and why it's in so much of a hurry!

When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? - Depends what day it is. Sometimes I do, and see my good points, and feel good. Other times I see my oily skin, grey hair, and go smiley - yikes.

Who would you describe as beautiful? - Angelina Jolie, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, a young Elizabeth Taylor, even.

Is beauty in the eye of the beholder? - Definitely, but I also think that what one person finds attractive, someone else will find repulsive smiley - erm.

Do you think we place too much emphasis on looks these days? - Yep. We judge people by them too much, too.

What do you consider to be your best and worst features? - I've got great boobs, and a reasonably hourglass figure. My hair I can't make my mind up about, given its huge grey streaks that I alternately love and hate. I hate my feet because they are short but extremely wide, so I struggle to find and fit into pretty shoes smiley - erm.

Would you rather date someone ugly with a personality or someone good-looking with no personality? - Personality wins. Sex gets boring eventually, you need to be able to have a conversation with someone to build a relationship with them!

Do you think we need more programmes like Ugly Betty on television, which don't feature a glamorous protagonist? - I haven't watched it.

Does beauty always equate with happiness? - No, same as money can't buy it either.

What one thing would you change about the way you look, if you had the chance? Am I only allowed one thing smiley - laugh. I'd like normal width feet, as that would make my life a lot easier; everything else goes towards making me who I am.
