A spot of further research has turned up some facts such as the source of the sound - though not recorded either in China or Egypt - would at some stage in history have been found there.

This particular example however hails from neither of those places.

I am leaving for work in one hour. If nobody solves it by then you will just have to carry on without me.

A practical edge I fear is misleading you, I don't mean to imply it is sharp but that it was useful - it does a particular job (and does it rather well) - hence, as above, is popularity across a whole region for a great many centuries of which few examples still remain. The Sound being perhaps the largest still in existence.

I reckon, when you find out what it is, you'll kick yourselves.
