The biker - just there to indicate a breeze (the scarf flaps)
Closest thing I could get pictorially to "holding a mike on a windy day!" smiley
The Sound emanates not from within China.

Just for the heck of it
A sixty five foot long scarf tied to a circular tower in the Sahara Desert.

If you went that far you'd have gone past it and heading away again!
A spot of further research has turned up some facts such as the source of the sound - though not recorded either in China or Egypt - would at some stage in history have been found there.
This particular example however hails from neither of those places.

I am leaving for work in one hour. If nobody solves it by then you will just have to carry on without me.

A practical edge I fear is misleading you, I don't mean to imply it is sharp but that it was useful - it does a particular job (and does it rather well) - hence, as above, is popularity across a whole region for a great many centuries of which few examples still remain. The Sound being perhaps the largest still in existence.

Maybe I should check my encyclopedia about the Alexandria Library.
Or the Lighthouse nearby there. I am convinced it is not a foghorn. You could hear one of those near Port Huron MI which you said was way off the mark.

The five letter word is there, in plain view!
Riama, perhaps!

Blow across the top of an empty bottle. What to you get?
A thrumming sound, just like the mystery noise.
I saw on TV a few weeks ago that there are wells dug deep into the desert to get at underground aquifers.
Is this the wind blowing over the top of one of these???
