(Just restoring the title clue)

They did build a replica of Stone Henge, but not from Polystyrene and not to test the sound qualities - someone thought to do that later - the replica was put there for another purpose.

Yes, the acoustics within the stone rings are different than from outside of the circle becuase of the number of surfaces for the sound to reflect off of.
Whether it was on purpose or not - opinion is, as they say, divided.
None of this however is getting anyone closer to working out what this mysterious sound is.

From the Stonehenge entry A9564942
>>In 1977, Paul Devereux and John Steel, authors of Earthmind, founded the Dragon Project to better understand the earth and her emanations. Using Geiger counters, ultrasound and other instruments to measure the magnetic frequencies at different places on the earth (specifically sacred sites) they found that the instruments registered higher in frequencies at the sacred sites than at other locations at nearby sites. They have speculated that the granite around the areas is able to 'hold' the frequencies, which have been enhanced through ritual and prayer. They also found that granite has the capacity to attract and emit radioactive fields.<<

That's explained in the next paragraph which I haven't quoted here. Scientists say they've never heard of a radioactive field.

No, I wonder why? Sounds like nonsense, probably is.
And it's not the answer to the sound clue nor is it getting you close to the bonus question of where the they tested the reverberation qualities.

H2G2 has an entry on stonehenge A9564942. It would probably have been left open with a line open for the priests to see the sunrise. rather than being an enclosed building.
the mayans on the other hand built their sacrificial altars on tall structures above the tree line where they could see the sun regardless of which direction it was.

Archeologist appropriate artifacts, so do treasure hunters.
There were legends about the Mayans hoarding caches of gold near their sacrificial altars. I would expect that would bring something. Then sea currents have a tendency to wash things around. You said you doubted that anything like this would end up in Cape Kennedy Florida but it has miles of ocean front to which only those who work there have access.

As to anything polynesian- we have already been told it was nowhere near the Pacific Basin but rather in the other direction.
