What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Rather than what the apple did to her it's what she did to the apple (and why)

I know. Life can be tough. smiley - hug

Maybe what you need to console you is a mate who can be a shoulder to cry on. smiley - cdouble

You really want them always be thinking of you and all you have is an an apple.

What quiet interesting thing could you do with it that circa 1558–1603 might have enticed a suitor back to the boudoir?

I've only two klaxons left so you'll have to be working really hard to trip any more now.

You have the majority of the salient facts before you now.

So what was the Countess of Shrewbury doing stuffing fruit into her undergarments?

....................................................................

Drilling a hole in it and inserting a 50 groat note always worked for me smiley - smiley

Or perhaps carving a subtle message onto the apple along the lines of "Hi there, big boy, is that a spare ruff in your tights or am I about to be glad I saw you?"

..................................................................

1. She was in charge of catering at aristocratic Elizabethan orgies?

2. She was famous for her after dinner treasure hunts?

3. She redefined the expression "Pop round for a fruit cocktail next Wednesday?"

4. She was one of the earliest proponents of the banning of plastic carrier bags and excessive packaging from supermarkets?

5. None of the servants was prepared to do it for her?

None of the above.

How best do you tell someone "I love you" 500 years before the invention of the text message?

Wonderful thing, manual dexterity...
For him, she

Cored it
Peeled it
Sliced it

It's possible to cover young apples/carve the skin in such a way that they grow with the message on them.

Could the colour of the apple be important?

Like, red apple means "I love you", green means "You make me sick" for instance. When a fellow approaches you retreive the desired colour apple from your person and hold it aloft so that it can be careful seen.

I think it was mentioned in an ep of QI a while that there was a lady who had a string of lovers and who wore a flower to indicate her current availability. If the flower was red then it was her 'time of the month', and all advances would be rejected.
