Well quiet.
And how do you think Elizabethan ladies communicated this to their husbands-to-be?

What's so special about having an apple in one's armpit? Don't you?
Maybe the apple forced the ladies to hold their arms against their body (instead of holding them up or something, like confident people in deo adverts)

Ah like some sort of finishing posture?
Nice idea but wrong

Er, I'm a bit confused again. Elizabethan ladies are wearing (peeled) apples in their armpits, and need to communicate this to their husband-to-be? Because these would get the message then?
Or is the fact that the ladies are wearing apples already obvious to the husbands-to-be?

Almost.
They don't need to communicate that they have peeled apples in their armpits - rather the medium is the message in this instance.
Having put the apple there - and maybe gone jogging round the ample gardens, for instance - what would they do with the apple?

"Here, hold the apple for me will you?"
Would they ask their suitor to hold the apple, making sure that he won't start wooing someone else, because it will be obvious that he's already taken, and if he leaves the apple somewhere and the lady comes back to find him appleless she will become suspicious?

Or they would eat it?
