Ah, and it sounds like 'orchid'. Er, orchards?
QI - "It's The Bolivian Navy on manoeuvres in The South Pacific!"
Clive the flying ostrich: Amateur Polymath | Chief Heretic. Posted Nov 10, 2010
Correct. +3
There, now wasn't that worth all that effort?
Okay so Hardwick has orchards and they would have possibly have been useful for attracting men-folk to her side.
Why? How? These mysteries and more still to be solved....
QI - "It's The Bolivian Navy on manoeuvres in The South Pacific!"
toybox Posted Nov 10, 2010
Oh, that was certainly worth it.
I'll go and have a good sleep to think about the rest. Except if nite owls solve* everything until tomorrow.
* I actually count on them () to trigger a few blue lights while I'm sleeping. I'll keep informed this time, promised!

Geggs Posted Nov 10, 2010
Is it to do with the fruit of the orchard, or the pollen, or sap from the trees?

The clue was in the title.
What's this? (Banana)
It's a small off duty Czechoslovakian traffic warden!
What's this? (orange)
It's a red and blue striped golfing umbrella.
What's this (apple)
It's an apple.
No...no...
It's The Bolivian Navy on manoeuvres in The South Pacific!
So the answer all along was "it's an apple"
Now all I want to know is why and specifically how with a slight detour via where?
QI - "It's The Bolivian Navy on manoeuvres in The South Pacific!"
Geggs Posted Nov 10, 2010
It is one of those historical quirks where apples were considered to be an aphrodisiac at one point, or is she injecting the apples with something? The opposite of a poisoned apple, as it were.

Oh it's definitely quirky and possibly just a little bit weird to boot
The apple was functionally useful.

"Quirky and just a little bit weird"
You are just asking for trouble..............so I will start it off (gently):
She stuffed apples up her vest to make herself more physically attractive?
QI - "It's The Bolivian Navy on manoeuvres in The South Pacific!"
Geggs Posted Nov 11, 2010
Did she perform some trick or other physical action involving the apples?

Only two more DGI's to get back to zero!
Sadly, as a gentleman, the vest is as far as I can go on a public forum.

I feel a 'Clive-play-on-words' here.
The apple I am now seeing is a Pomander.....
(French. Pomme d'ambre - apple of amber)
A perforated globe containing sweet smelling substances. Needed in those days as the Aristos rarely washed. Was it Liz I who said she only had one bath a year - whether needed or not????
That it, old boy???
