Talking Point: Euphemism and Innuendo
Created | Updated Nov 27, 2003
Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more...
At h2g2, we're not fond of innuendo. If we ever find a suggestive comment in an entry, we whip it out straight away. But some people thrive on it, urged on by memories of Monty Python's 'Nudge-nudge' man and the old British tradition of saucy sea-side post-cards and Carry On... films. Sometimes, however, innuendo just loses its appeal. There can be few people who see Graham Norton's act who are in any doubt as to the true meaning of his punchlines - turning the single entendre into an art-form.
Just remember, kids, it's not big and it's not clever. But it is this week's Talking Point...
How near the knuckle can you afford to go in polite society?
Have you ever accidentally let something slip out that you didn't mean to, at a job interview, family gathering or other inappropriate occasion?
What's the best euphemism you've ever heard that didn't cross the line into plain smut?
Please try to keep your comments clean though. If you cross that line, we'll have to pull your posting.
