Lonnytunes - Winter Is Here

Titania, the elves are being blamed for the rumblings of discontent that are brewing in middle earth. This comes from a NZ Sunday paper today

Fears that the movie version of the famous fantasy tale Lord of the Rings is turning into a love story has sent J R R Tolkien fans into a spin.
Fuelling their concerns are rumours of an expanded role for Arwen in the $360 million movie trilogy, being filmed in New Zealand by Wellington director Peter Jackson.
The role of the princess Arwen, played by Hollywood star Liv Tyler, is believed to have been expanded from the book to include a more detailed love affair with Aragorn, played by Viggo Mortensen.
The change has upset some fans who according to one United States-based Lord of the Rings expert Michael Martinez, have a "very fixed image of Arwen".
"Most people are upset not with Liv Tyler so much as the expanded role for Arwen," he said.
Lord of the Rings has attracted intense international interest with about 1.7m web users downloading an interact trailer for the films on the first day it was available - double the number of hits for Star Wars Episode 1.

Titania (gone for lunch)

Hey, movies are fantasy, right?
And WE live in *the real world*
If some ethnical, cultural or religious group would take offence every time a film was made, there would be cacophony every time, right?
But I'm sure the REAL friends of the elves won't care much about this movie, since it's only fiction, after all...

Yes, but I've seen too many examples of films based upon books I've read, and then someone's bought the rights for the title, and the film turns out NOTHING like the book, but something entirely different and totally commercial..
So - I really don't care..

*comes in through the back, nodding to the scrabble players on the porch*

Hi everybody. *decides this will be a good time to change filters on IIEM, while boiling bottled water for green tea*

What's this about messing with the plot of one of the pillars of modern mythology? There IS no romantic love interest in The Lord of the Rings, it's not that kind of story. I have to disagree with Titania on that; it does matter, because that might be the only contact some young people will have with Tolkien.

Consider the way the Brits are reacting to U-571! That's taking the truth of a story seriously indeed...

*puts Greebo back down carefully after nearly dropping carton of donuts*

IIEM, a Greebo Special please. Here we go, Joanna is packing Goo and Alabaster donuts into our daily assortment, now, so you help yourself. I know you will anyway. smiley - smiley

Greebo, please describe your mug. Have you seen the mugs for regulars? They're at http://www.h2g2.com/A345476 ...

Mornin' jrl, sorry to hear about the demise about your coffee maker. Does one send flowers or grounds?

This here is Greebo T Cat, one of our most senior regular customers. I'm not going to ask her why she hasn't been around because she is a cat, and one does not ask this of cats.

Greebs, we do have a lot of new faces, but I will introduce you to them as and when they appear. jrl hasn't been with h2g2 very long, and I believe this is one of the first places he has adopted.

Barney's Bucksaws

Good morning all. Coffee, please IIEM. Thanks for putting the flag up yesterday, Lil, greatly appreciate it. It was a great day. Watched the pipers and dancers, and the heavy games, ate haggis on an oat cake. I met a bunch of people who know my son from Sons of Scotland, including a Japanese-Scottish fellow - interesting, and seemingly the best of both his cultures. Last night we saw the fireworks display, and my eyes are a little puffy from bright light in pitch darkness.
