Caretaker Counter Part 5
Asteroid Lil - Offstage Presence Posted May 24, 2000
As assistant caretaker of the cafe, I was hounded by my sense of responsibility, which is a bit hypertrophied in any case...
I wonder how many people were trying to access h2g2 this afternoon. Talk about bad advertising! If I wasn't addicted to this site I'd never come back. I can't even imagine not coming back, however. I have too many friends here.

My doberman is at my elbow, looking down at me, and reminding me that it is her dinnertime. She will not be gainsaid.
*puts IIEM on autopilot*
OK, y'all just get what you need from the machine till I get back.

See you later, Courtesy. We'll continue the chess game when you return. I'll have Ook make sure no one touches it
Hi Loreth, Demon.. Welcome, Tap
Poor Lil... She hasn't been able to stay on for more than a few minutes all day because of connection problems, and now she has a hungry doberman staring at her

I am so sorry, Ioreth. That uppercase I(i), lowercase l(L) similarity in non-serif fonts messes me up all the time.
By the way, thanks for the duct tape wallet tutorial. I've been thinking about getting a new wallet, and I may go that route instead. Also enjoyed the euchre entry... I've been playing for years.

Wow you did some thorough research on me... thanks! there are now three known euchre players on H2G2... one more and we can play!
yeah it's the guide fault for overriding my default text font and using Arial, which is ever so much less clear than Times New Roman.
Although my personal fav font has always been Haettenschweiler, for the name.

Give me Garamond or give me ... er ... green tea, I think.
Hallo Tap, welcome to the cafe. Well done finding your way all the way down to the bottom of the latest thread!
The dog is content, for the moment, and my own dinner is just a quarter hour away, more or less. It's nice to come back and find you other survi -- regulars still here.

IIEM, house coffee please *IIEM produces coffee*
That's OK, Ook, you can go back to playing with the scrabble tiles. Sorry to have startled you.
Ioreth,
Yeah, I like to get a little bit of an idea of who I'm talking to, which also helps me to find interesting places in my first week. Heck, I even know that you're "pathetic."
Times New Roman Postscript is my absolute favorite text font for graphic design. Clearest and easiest to read, and you almost never tire of it. I'll have to do some checking to see if I can find Haettenschweiler. I agree -- the name's great! I'd love to go to the printer and say "Oh, by the way, that section should, of course, be in Haettenschweiler Oblique."
There's got to be one more euchre player somewhere around. I'd love to play.

Just out of interest, could y'all check out a cartoon at http://www.h2g2.com/A366007 and see whether you find it amusing? It's turned out to be one of those either/or sort of things.
I have been using Adobe Garamond for newsletters because it seems to have the roundness of Dick-and-Jane Century but is much much lighter. Extremely legible at smaller sizes.

Lil,
You sure you got the number for the cartoon right? I'm not getting anything at that address.
I agree that Garamond is good when you're looking for that fullness of shape. Still prefer TNRPS.
D.D. You OK? Maybe too much anti-coffee? Perhaps we need to give you a shot of my favorite -- a blend of French and Italian roast brewed strong and served black.

It's 336007, not 366007, which probably doesn't exist yet.

You're right, it probably is an either/or thing, but then again, I've got a pretty sick sense of humor sometimes and I thought it was hilarious.
I think I actually drove by there once when I was traveling out west.

My cyber-nephew didn't understand it. I was surprised. Some of Kliban's stuff is so subtle it goes into some other dimension, but this is a straightforward double whammy, I ythought. There will be a different one up tomorrow. *sidesteps copyright in favour of homage*

I love the off-beat absurdity in Kliban's humor. I've always enjoyed his stuff, but don't think I'd seen this one before.
*pretends it's not copyright issue but rather fair-use*
