Hi, Courtesy,
Don't know if we've met yet, but then I've only been around a week and I'm still trying to get to know who everyone is.
Care to play a game of chess sometime?

Greetings RedBeard, I don't believe that we have been formally introduced I have been reading your conversations though
I would love a game of chess. We actually have a chess club based off of the Aroma Cafe, if you want just start up a new thread and give me the link

*fills orders*
Hallo Redbeard, yes, I had a case of the dreaded ring-no-answer. It's cleared, and now I'm being gazumped on occasion by users who seem to have more priority than me.
I can't play chess. I am unable to visualize in 3D, it's the part of the Stamford-Binet test I always messed up. A function of right-left dyslexia, I'm told. I can't sew from patterns or put together prefab furniture, either...

Well, this should be interesting. My first chess game not IRL.
I set up a thread at http://www.h2g2.com/forumframe.cgi?forum=31920&thread=53912
*suddenly looks very nervous*
So, do you play a lot?
How about another cup of coffee, Lil?...
Lil?...
Hmmm... I can see her, but she keeps fading in and out.

*clutches the counter firmly* Jetzt bin ich noch hier...

I was just chatting to a nice German fellow called Quietsch. The Germans have established a bar, and I've asked for the URL.
OK, on with the IIEM and I'll be back in under 2 hours, net willing. More things to do IRL.

Ah, there you are, Lil. Much clearer.
I guess I'm spoiled by an ADSL line. No ringing. Always connected.
Wait a second. We're playing 3D chess? Oh, I see what you mean. Hey, don't worry, I don't think anyone can put together pre-fab furniture -- it's designed to be impossible (partly because the instructions are written by someone in the 4th dimension, used to building tesseracts).
Caretaker Counter Part 5
Courtesy38 Posted May 24, 2000
Also, they don't give all the parts I can't tell you the number of times I have set down to build out some pre-fab furniture, the direction say "take the widgit and put it in the whatfor" and I look at the directions, can't find anything that even closely resembles a widget or for that matter the whatfor it was supposed to go in. I get my friends, we all scratch our heads and then go get a beer and speak of the vagaries of directions from the fourth dimesion.
Redbeard, don't worry, I don't play that much, that's actually why I started playing on H2G2, I can't seem to find anyone around me that wants to play.

Actually, if you have 7 or 8 beers BEFORE you begin the project, the instructions make a lot more sense. Unfortunately, the finished product has about the same sense of balance that you do and you end up with extra parts.
I know what you mean about finding chess partners. And when you have people over for a party, it really seems the wrong time to start a chess game.

Yeah at a party, most people can't think what they want to do the next moment, and here I want to put on some Beethoven or Mozart and settle down to a couple of hours of chess
somat - greetings, we play algebraic chess here in the h2g2 world. Here's the link to our chess game

IIEM, double espresso please *IIEM produces espresso*
Hi, Somat
Would have said something sooner, but I've been unable to get h2g2 pages to load for a couple of hours -- DNA must have made another anouncement about the site.
Courtesy, yes, I guess the chess club is really taking off. How many boards do you have?

It has taken me almost an hour of real struggle to get to this point. Disconnections, busy signals, glacial response from this site, culminating in its refusal to recognise the fact that I R a registered researcher. I nearly burst into tears, being able to see the conversation after 40 minutes of persistent trying, only to be barred at the cgi window.
I need some anticoffee.

Me too... need to sleep before my exam tomorrow.... this one I really am going to fail, but never mind, resits in August!
Hows everyone doing? I guess 'cause I came online late I've missed the slowmotion period...

Don't worry, Lil, you're not alone.
All I was getting for a very long time was "Host h2g2 contacted, waiting for reply."
Is it safe to ask the IIEM for anticoffee?
Redbeard

Asteroid Lil - Offstage Presence Posted May 24, 2000
Oh yes, we do anticoffee. Joanna invented it, I think. Be careful, though, it's quite soporific.
I was just SO insulted, when the screen came up and said "Greetings stranger." Moi!

But now it seems to be back, happy, happy, happy

anticoffee, huh? Will wonders never cease?
*takes sip*
...Ohhh, I see..... Hmmmmm.....
I've actually been able to use regular coffee to calm myself, but this -- much better.
Hi, Joanna!
Yes, h2g2 was v e r y s l o w this afternoon.
Lil, as long as you've been greeted as a stranger by h2g2, maybe we can get a couple of the Aces to drop by and greet you as well
