I was wondering if I should start something myself, but wasn't sure what to do bout it. How many Christians are there here on h2g2?

smiley - ermNot too many of us, judging by the amount of posting that goes on here.

I think someone else started another page for us elsewhere, but I'd have to look it up, been a long time since anyone's posted there either.

There is a not-terribly-Christian-friendly vibe here sometimes, especially with some people and places. I've noticed a heap of Christian people on old threads who seem to have gone, but maybe it's just that they were students and left h2g2 when they left their university and started work.

Hopefully it's not that they got scared away. Can't get my head around that article. It's so hostile.

He is just a very hostile guy! I have tangled with him a lot, which is a pity, and he doesn't listen, so I admire your courage in continuing to speak to him... There are quite a lot of people like him - which is why it's great that there is a (numerically smaller, I gather) Christian group.

I am an Anglo-Catholic, ex-Open Brethren, in New Zealand. I gather you're in Ireland.. what church are you?

Yup I'm in Ireland. Have you heard of the Vineyard church? It's a non-denominational (which is good here). Think there's one or two in New Zealand.

Yes, I have heard of the Vineyard churches, I think there's one quite near here...

I don't know what the rest are like, but mine in fun. We get smiley - donuts and smiley - coffee and smiley - tea when we arrive too.

Very upbeat music and you can wear whatever you like too.

What's your church like?

I haven't been to a church for a while, but when I did, I'd go to the Brethren in term time and the Anglican in the holidays.

The Brethren was pretty much as you describe yours, but the Anglican was smaller and quieter... but they both had strengths. The Brethren church was less warm to newcomers, which we were at the time, but it had a more 'family friendly' feel.

I've never been to a Brethern church, but I know a few people who have. Not sure what ythey're like with you, but here they're very strict in terms or women wearing hats, many don't have TV sets, and things like that.

There are too many different types of churches though. Around my town there are a couple of churches that have had big splits and stuff. It's not good. Think all churches have their good and bad points, but they can get too caught up on the differences to get along.

Brethren churches (or chapels as they prefer to be called) vary greatly. The one we went to, was one of the more 'liberal', but in another, nearby suburb was a very strict one, re the things you mention, hats, TV etc.

I agree with you about splits and disagreements - it's sad.

It is so sad. It's supposed to be the body of Christ and the one church family, but everyone keeps falling out.

Of course each individual congregation will be able to reach and attract different people, but they should all agree on the basics rather than fight over women's dress/organs/communion or whatever else they argue about.

I fully agree. In the Anglican and catholic Communions there is less likelihood of this kind of split (they got their splits over with years or centuries ago!)

Yeah! It's quite scary to think that all the denominations started from the Catholic church.

Universal Granny

Have you got room for a good old Church of England granny? I became a Christian when I was 8 and continued in strong Christian fellowship until just after I got married. He was a Christian too, but two years after we married, he decided that he had "finished with that phase" and would not be attending Church any more.

He didn't object to me going, but when the children came along, he made it difficult for me by not agreeing to look after them whilst I attended church. Then he left me when they were 4 and 6, and somehow, I just did not have the time to go back to church.

However, the girls are now 31 and 33 with families of their own, and, at the instigation of a definitely non-Christian friend, who decided that she wanted to see what the Church was all about, I went on an Alpha Course with her, and we now both go to the local C of E - have been going since November 2004.

I am happy, because I have recovered my old faith.... but with an entirely different view of it. I have so many questions....

However, you may not want a rabbitting granny on your space, so I will leave you now...........

Take care smiley - hug Universal Granny

Welcome, Universal Granny... I think I met you in about 2001, or '02, somewhere, didn't I?

Good to hear from you again, you have my sympathy about your husband, who seems to have been unhelpful, to say the least...

Oh, he's OK. Just wild and restless in those days - unfortunately with important consequences. He did maintain us to his best ability and, in fact, we are still friends, but he has married again, and got his own life. He comes to see his grandchildren (and children) every now and then, and I have made it so that my children can make their own peace with him, which they have.

I am at work at the moment, so have to keep dodging in and out depending on whether I am needed or not. Have to go and see a despatch in now.....

Take care, Universal Granny
