I have several Billy gigs on DVD and CD, he can ramble for about and hour after raising a point and then go back to it almost seamlessly. It really is amazing how he can do that

Opti, have you ever watched Billy Connolly perform? Even on TV? When he did his Australia tour, for example, he performed in a different town every night. I watched it and probably so did Gnomon. That's probably how Gnomon knows, though I will leave it for him to confirm, if you prefer.

nah you've confirmed the point clearly enough just got to contemplate now how to put it in the text.

or you could take the approach that, except for the rare occation, Gnomon knows everything

Godd brief, but comprehensive entry.
Just a couple of comments:
"When Connolly's father came home from the war, he lived with his sisters in the overcrowded flat and shared the sofabed with his son. He often came home drunk and sexually abused his son for five years." I really think this needs rewording, it seems to lose sense of who 'he' is as the start of the paragraph is about Billy.
Also, with that incident and others I think they need a little more context as to why there important to include, for example the fact that he draws on these childhood experiences for his routines.
The last section on controversey seems a little isolated - it lacks the real context and just one example doesn't really build the case for contraversial Connolly.
And a couple of suggestions:
He was famously an enourmous baby, in terms of birth weight - although having said that I cannot find the stat.
He was voted Britain's Greatest standup comedian in a Channel 4 for their 100 greatest...

>>He was voted Britain's Greatest standup comedian in a Channel 4 for their 100 greatest...
Can I ask that any entry that has a 'he was voted the ... greatest ....' is shot with something.
Sorry, but .... AHHHHHHHH
Given that Frankie Howard and Ken Dodd were int he 70s and 50s of that poll, it was utter tosh
as are the toshy polls that say Bohiemium Rhapsody is the greatest song ever
Or the Q poll that said that Bez was a far more influensial musican than Michael Jackson or Chuck Berry
These polls are really just opinions, therefore as opinion pieces are not warrented for inclusion in H2G2. IMHO.
Sorry, personal rantage

How about then, '*a* Channel 4 poll in 2007 rated Billy Connelly the Greatest British Comedian some x years after his first stand-up routine'?

Adhered to Scrumph's ideas except this:
>> The last section on controversey seems a little isolated - it lacks the real context and just one example doesn't really build the case for contraversial Connolly.
I'm going to re-read the second link Zarquon gave me and still need to work in the ramblings.

tangents and controversy dealt with.
I'm interested to hear everyone's opinion on polls so that I can make a valid judgement. I personally do feel though they are rather opinionated.

I think that's the whole point of polls, Opti.
It's worth putting in your entry that he topped a 2007 poll as Britain's best stand-up comedian, considering who was also voted for, and didn't better him, it was high praise indeed.

sadly, I don't think you'd get away with putting down that the poll was voted for by a bunch of idiots!!

In that para you mention "Elton John" five times, you can say "Elton John" the first time, and then Elton afterwards.

I don't understand this, how could Mr Bigley comment, when he was never released, but beheaded in Iraq?

I'll let you sort that.

I'm not sure "unliked" is the correct word there, perhaps "unpopular" would be better and if they're in Australia, locals would be Aussies so no need to say "some local Aussies" - just "some locals"

Alchol = Alcohol
remberance = rememberance
One day a taxi Driver = driver
'The Billy Connolly Extravaganza' should be in italics tags
and drop the quotes
same goes for 'The Secret Policeman's Ball'
Amnesty International. that's incorrect GuideML, delete http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/
Comic Relief
that should be Comic Relief
Not The Nine O'Clock News - italic tags
for which he was nominated a BAFTA award = for a BAFTA award
<>
That doesn't make sense.
