OK here goes
Name: Gandark
Rank: Ensign
Job: Holodeck Manager
This is my same RPG character as in my RPG, described here http://nerd_42.tripod.com/gandark.html
Basically he's a hobbit/halfling from the Lord of the Rings books - only in the Star Trek universe.
He comes from a Shire-like planet called "Yarnthread", where many Lord-of-the-Rings-like creatures live, (including hobbits, elves, dwarves, orcs etc) and advanced technology always kind of clashes with thousands-of-years-old lifestyles that go on right alongside. In a nutshell, Yarnthread politics can be described as, "Technophobia versus Technomania" - a constant battle between the old and the new. Thus, the merits of Federation membership is still being argued in Yarnthread politics. Because Gandark has left his home planet obviously shows which side he's on in this contraversy.
Yarnthread leaders had the planet join the Federation contraversially just before Gandark passed the test to enter Starfleet Academy. In the Academy, Gandark specialized in Engineering, especially in holographic programming and hologram-personality-creation. While his primary job is keeping the holodecks working and up-to-date, he also helps with the replicators and other crew morale-related functions, as well as assisting with any Engineering duties that may be required in an emergancy. (Like anyone with his level of academy training, he is qualified to run tractor beams, fill in for Engineering chief, and even do bridge duty if the officers aren't availible)

I might create a second character if nobody signs up to be the chief engineer after a while and I'm not too busy with other stuff. (I am pretty busy now, that's why I took a low-profile kind of job)
