This is something girls do some time after they've moved in with a bloke. They adopt an old pair of his bachelor pants as a cleaning cloth. It's making a statement of some sort, I think, but I'm not sure exactly what. I know that I felt real pride the day I first used an old pair of my husband's (this was after consultation with him).

Well, if the lady is using one of the very very small G-string sort of thingies that consist of hardly any cloth at all, the message might simply be: I ain't gonna clean your house, get it?!?!!

About 3 years ago I acquired a pair of disposable hospital pants (the ones you have to wear when going for an operation), since when I've been using them as a face flannel

Disposable hospital pants?
I never had those. But when all you're wearing otherwise is a hospital gown and those strange stockings, the biggest granny pants you can find are your friend
