and, for the 'religious leaders showing a moral conscience' file:
'A group of Canadian and U.S. Islamic leaders on Friday issued a fatwa, or religious edict, declaring that an attack by extremists on the two countries would constitute an attack on the 10 million Muslims living in North America.
The 20 imams associated with the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada said this marked the first fatwa by the Muslim clergy declaring attacks on Canada and the U.S. to be attacks on Muslims.
"In our view, these attacks are evil, and Islam requires Muslims to stand up against this evil," the imams said in their fatwa.
Calgary Imam Syed Soharwardy, founder of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada, said attacks on Canadian or U.S. soil are essentially attacks on Muslims.
"We are part of this society," he said. "This is my home, and if anybody attacks on Canada, in fact, attacks on my home."
The imams said it is a duty of every Muslim in Canada and the U.S. to safeguard the two countries.
"They must expose any person, Muslim or non-Muslim, who would cause harm to fellow Canadians or Americans," they said.'

I'm just curious: has this fatwa received any attention on the BBC? As near as I can tell it's been pretty much ignored by the major U.S. news sources. As I've mentioned elsewhere, this is the latest in a long line of condemnations of extremism that have been made by Canadian Muslims and their leaders since 9/11 and before. Sadly, these condemnations have been largely ignored by the news media.

There's a rather glorious comment on that article:
>>
Pat Robertson is lucky to be a holy prophet who has direct conversations with God.
Because if he was simply senile, arrogant and deluded, his comments might be considered grossly inappropriate.

Just seen a woman and her daughter being interviewed on tv in Haiti. She said "God saved me". Presumably this is a different god from the one that tried to kill her in the first place.

There's no point even trying to think about people saying that sort of thing. It's a statement made by people who have truly detached their ability to be rational.
Her god saved two people but let multiple thousands of others die...yes..or it was just blind luck.
Life's a bitch..life with it...sometimes you win sometimes you die.

The christians have lashed out against freedom of religion again in the U.S., it seems:
' A large wooden cross was placed at an Air Force Academy worship area for pagans and other Earth-centered religions, prompting an investigation by academy officials, though some caution that it's hardly "destructive behavior."
Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said an Air Force Academy staffer spotted the cross — erected with railroad ties — lying against a rock at a worship area for pagan groups at the academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Jan. 17.
Tech. Sgt. Brandon Longcrier, a self-described pagan who sponsors the group that worships there, said the incident was similar to someone leaving a pentagram or a pagan symbol at the academy's chapel altar and claimed he and others are victim of a hate crime.'

(Godwin's law warning)
This is no different from a swastika being left at the door of a synagogue, as Mr. Weinstein mentions in the article.

Well, isn´t it nice to see some people stay forever young?
These "pagans" are like the teen "punkers" hereabouts in the 80s.
...Just because I wear a kilt and have my hair dyed green everybody looks at me - oh they are so cruel.
Mind - they never found out they could sue and become famous.

'Michele Bachmann, the outspoken conservative House representative from Minnesota, says the United States will cease to exist if it "fails to stand" with Israel.
"I am convinced in my heart and in my mind that if the United States fails to stand with Israel, that is the end of the United States," Bachmann said at a meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Los Angeles on Feb. 6.
Bachmann went on to explain that God's special relationship with Israel means the US would be cursed if it were to oppose Israeli policies.
"We have to show that we are inextricably entwined, that as a nation we have been blessed because of our relationship with Israel, and if we reject Israel, then there is a curse that comes into play," Bachmann said.'

People talk about the "Jewish lobby" in the States. I'm not convinced that it exists, or that it's very powerful if it does. I think it's Christians like this, who are often simultaneously sort-of-Zionist and sort-of-anti-Semitic. An interesting trick.
Christopher Hitchens remarks on the death of Jerry Falwell mentioned this phenomenon.

yes, Trig, there is certainly that repugnant strain of Christianity there. They are very anxious that the Jews be supported so that they can rebuild the Temple so that Christ can return and wipe the unbelieving Zionist regime from the pages of history.
