DA ; Simply Vicky: Don't get pithy with me! Posted Mar 10, 2003
That's an interesting 'can', Subcom... I think generally, 'I was only following orders' *isn't* accepted now. My father certainly never accepted 'she told me too' as an excuse when we sisters would try to blame each other. I am reminded of the man in Israel I read about in the paper yesterday, who's been in prison for a year, and is going to be tried by a military court because he refuses to sign up for compulsory reservist status. He wishes not to have to follow orders to do wrong... I'll see if I can find a link, though you may already know the story.

Sorry, Subcom, that particular story is not on lineIt's interesting, though. I wish I could remember the guy's name...

Thank you Chauncey for giving us all a fresh perspective. The peacemongers among us have been holding our ground in this thread and ventilating quite heatedly at anyone who appears here in support of the war. In the main, the warmongers who have come here to cheer on the slaughter have been 'trolls'. So we have been bashing them pretty good. It is quite understandable that you got flamed for appearing to be a bloodthirsty patriot, which I am certain you are not. In fairness perhaps whenever you enter this sort of 'adult' discussion you should let people know a bit more about you first.
And thank you all for restating your beliefs in a concise and reasonable fashion that will allow Chauncey to see the facts as awful and hard for her to believe as they may be. Chauncey please re-read what Ravenbait and Analiese said after they were properly informed of your age and situation. They sum it up very well. War is evil and this one is unnecessary and doomed to failure.
And a special thank you to Montana Redhead for sharing her perspective. I'm sure if we had known about your predicament (hubby's on the list) we would have been more sympathetic. I'm pretty sure that Chauncey will know how you must be feeling. It must be awful knowing people who are over there or about to go.
Having said all that, my position remains unchanged. War is evil. Bombing Iraq will kill millions of innocents and accomplish nothing but hatred, anger and a thirst for revenge that will sweep thru the region. This plays into the hand so Ossama and the Islamic fundamentalists. The Arab world is already just barely being kept under the control of secular infidels who will roll over or be pushed aside once the blood letting begins. But that's not all.
WARNING: Children and wives please close your eyes!
Because of the stupidity of George W. Doofus and his ill considered plan, nearly a quarter million Americans will find themselves trapped in the middle of a desert that is completely surrounded by a dozen angry Arab countries. Perhaps Analiese can find us some maps that will show how Gen Custer made the same arrogant mistake.
peace, please

That's the truth of it!
And as I said above, the result fo this evil will be disaster.

Respect thou's like you like to be respected I say but if you are disrespected like I have been well hey, on the subject of Iraq people seem to forget that it is holy land way before Hussian was there & I feel personal it would be great disrespect to bomb Iraq. The only way I see is to go in with ground troop's cause even if the bomb's don't ingnight the oil it will still disrepect the land in which is holy land way before Jesus. So on the other subject of current event's with the fact that America has a problem with Iraq; The American government offical's are going to do what they are going to do & what they see fit to do with Iraq so not much that can be done. They I hope haven't forgot about the Serb's & North Korea. They can't forget the simple fact that North Korea has a problem with America because of Vietnam. It has been said that America lost the war but America is a superpower still in the aspect of America culture around the world. So what is going to happen is going to happen. Much luck to America & America's allie's to get the job done/ working their thing with the situation. I figure that what I've heard on the new's about getting Hussiane to step down is a good idea but what about the next person who would take Hussiane's spot. If American Government offical's really want to get rid of Hussiane they need to get him & everyone associated with his rein out of office in Iraq or it will defeat the purpose of just getting him out of office/rein in Iraq. Not unless, actully that's it there is no unless.

Della - don't know if this is the refusenik story you were referring to, but it's quite a good one nonetheless - Benjy Netanyahu's nephew says hell no he won't go:
http://www.observer.co.uk/international/story/0,6903,910550,00.html
He is being derided as a "self-hating Jew" - sad.........
By the way, do you remember the story I told you last week about the National Security Agency spying on UN delegates ? The Observer had a follow-up on Sunday. A 28 year old woman employed at GCHQ (HM Gov's primary listening station) was arrested (last week !) for breach of the Official Secrets Act, i.e. leaking the memo from Frank Koza:
http://www.observer.co.uk/iraq/story/0,12239,910648,00.html
For those in the UK, ask yourself why you have not heard ONE WORD of this story, then think again about our Media's reputation for fearless reporting.
Spread the word. Cos the Beeb won't.

Whether my husband is on the list to go or not makes no never mind to me. Even if he weren't, I wouldn't support this war. It isn't really even a war, now, is it? Not in the conventional sense of the term. No one's declaring war, least of all Shrub. He's calling it a "regime change."

I'm not disputing your right to call it evil, or even the accuracy of the description. I expect there are plenty of people who would not call it evil and would call it good. I suppose that comes down to what some pagans affectionately refer to as a 'Deity p**sing contest' - 'my God is bigger than your God'. 'My definition of Good and Evil are more objectively right than your definition of Good and Evil'.
A difference of opinion, you see.
If evil is causing the unnecessary suffering of others, are whale huinters evil for killing whales inumanely? Are wolves evil for taking three days to kill a caribou? Is it evil when a lion throttles an antelope to death? Or does this evil require qualifiers so that only humans can do it?
It's as good a definition of evil as I have seen, but it's not universal law.
Anyway, last I heard both Russia and France were going to use their veto, as even the weapons inspectors say they need another 2 or 3 months to do the job they were asked to do in 1441.
