A1016704 - How did we survive?
Farlander Posted Apr 7, 2003
this is an intriguing little article, and it certainly makes one think twice about what one has done in life and survived, but i must honestly say that it doesn't *quite* adhere to the h2g2 writing guidelines, unless you were to make this a personal account thing (which it doesn't seem to be) or if you were to discuss it in greater detail without being too opinion-driven. also, i would think that a number of your points don't *quite* lead to your conclusion - a lot of other kids who did what you said they did have died of dysentery, in accidents or of heart disease. i wouldn't exactly call that surviving.
have you thought about sending this to the h2g2 post instead? i think it would make a better home for your article, not to mention an interesting discussion topic.

lol dysentery??? OMG!! this was the 1960's u know!!
n many people today die of heart attacks and accidents so that doesn't really pan out does it?
i'm only in my 40's(not ancient yet!!) n there r a lot of others of my age and older on here, whom i'm sure will/do remember the different lifestyle we lived as children will agree with what i'm trying to say.
it's not like we're reminicing the war years, just contrasting and comparing childhood 30/40 years ago as oppsed to childhood 2day!!
having said that
, i take ur point that this might be the best place for this article, but there doesn't seem to be a geriatric space!!

re: dystentery - well, they did in the developing countries. (and still do. cholera is still a very big issue in india) unless of course, your discussion deals primarily with people living in the states.
don't worry too much about there not being a geriatrics column - i think that the post will accept articles on various topics, and will accommodate them one way or the other. you could go to the post office and contact shazz (who is pretty prompt at replying messages) and make enquiries. or you could perhaps make suggestions to start a column on nostalgia and reminiscence - i think that would attract a lot of potential columnists.

being a trained nurse who just happens to have a degree in politics i am well aware of global concerns and situations,(re: india and 3rd world countries)
and i REALLY hope that comment about a geriactric column
was typed in sarcasm(as mine was!) i have yet to lose my sense of humour!!
if u have bothered the read these posts at all u'll comprehend that
they are about growing up, (in the era specified) in england!
personally in the north east of england (which could vary widely from someone growing up on other parts of the country).
i don't know if u r too yung to understand or r just deliberately missing the point
but if u need nemore insight into
this topic please don't hesitate to ask.

Come on Farlander, get a life!!! lighten up!!! have a nice large
Growing up in the 60,s and 70,s WAS different, life in England then was more carefree and unrestricted for children, we were encouraged to be independent and grew up without the many fears that we have for our young today, Yes artificial colourings were not considered a problem in those days, and we ate as many ice-creams, fish and chips, full fat dumplings, suet puddings, full fat milk etc., etc., as we could, but because we were not dumped in front of the computer/gameboy/telly all day, but were off out on our bikes, we didn,t suffer the epidemic obesity and all it,s associated problems, that so many children seem to suffer today, we did not live in fear of paedeophiles, or being snatched off the street by perverts, yes, it happened then, but it seems to happen a hell of a lot more in our society today. We were smart, streetwise and confident, yes we probably tasted our first cider and ciggarette at 13, many of us attended church on Sunday,s so the fear of the possibilty of hell kept many of us on the straight and narrow!!!
So my dear you think we are all past it geriatrics when we pass 40??
Ahh, how wrong you are age brings it,s benefits you know and will no doubt find out, at 40+ we can be real lovely
but with the benefit of experience!!

i apologise if i have unwittingly offended anybody. the purpose of my post was simply to point out that the article, being about reminiscence and all, does not adhere to the h2g2 writing guidelines, and that a home in the h2g2 papers would be more appropriate. the 'geriatrics' reference was in response to what the author wrote in her reply post, and is in no way intended to insult or injure, however one might interpret it.

Apology accepted and point taken(yet again)that this may not
be the best place for my earlier posting.
However, how on earth can you say, in all seriousness, that ne
insults were unintended????
*The opening sentence of your post was patronizing to say the least! (ie: 'this is an intriguing little article')....don't tell me, let me guess, this bit was unintended to b an insult or put down in neway!!
*Suggesting i 'might like to discuss it in greater detail without being too opinion driven'
...telling me how to write??...oops...i forgot..an UNINTENTIONAL insult!
*YOU think a number of my points don't 'quite' lead to the conclusion'????
If u don't understand something,.....then ask!! it's the best way to learn.
*'A lot of kids who did what i said they did had died of DYSENTERY,accidents or heart disease'?????
Just how many cases of dsyentery were there(fatal or otherwise) in 1960's England??
*Your arguement about accidents and heart disease don't hold up because they can happen to neone, netime, newhere!
*'The 'geriatrics' reference was in response to what the author wrote'
The 'author' has a name!!!!
I'm interested to know what makes u think that chips(french fries),suet puddings and dumplings are part of a staple diet in india or indeed ne of the developing countries!
IF you had of taken the time to THINK about this logically u may have realised just how totally ridiculous ur post reads.
IF u had of been GENUINELY interested in replying to this post, surely u wud have clicked onto my space to find out where i was from first so u could make a sensible contribution.
I hope these r pointers for u in the future and, please note that
if nething in this post has insulted u in neway, it has been totally unintentional.

I have often used your ideas in conversation. One other point I like to add is the "Asbestos Pad" I rember in the 50's ( USA ) my Mother would always ask on of us kids to put the asbestos pad on the table for the hot pan, it ws much later that asbestos was found to be one of worst cancer causing agents in the univerise.
I usually conclude that obviously the entire human race was destroyed in 1957 but we didn't notice.
