Absolutely love 'Images and Words' - couldn't quite get my head around 'Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence' tho....

How are you on Porcupine Tree?

I like Porcupine Tree but can find that, sometimes, they fail to deliver for me. They never quite reach the crescendo that they promise (sometimes).

btw - 6 degrees of inner turbulence I lurve - nice and LOUD. Plus Mike Portnoy (Drummer) just excels himself at times.

Perhaps I should give '6 Degrees..' another go sometime. They're definately more (ahem) "subtle" than DT that's for sure smiley - winkeye.

Except possibly the 'In Absentia' album which was as metal as they've ever got I think. There's some serious metal-out moments on the new one 'Deadwing' too.

How new is "Deadwing"? Plus PTree songs are all Mp3s I've gathered over the years. Some aren't titled and some I don't know what album they're off smiley - doh.

Have you heard Spocks Beard? Only saw them once supporting DTheatre and am wondering what they're like as a whole.

How about, instead of Pop Idol we have a Prog Idol smiley - laugh

Prog Idol... Good idea, but the grand final would be about a week long smiley - laugh

'Deadwing' has been out a couple of months, and is brilliant. Seriously, if you're a DT fan, you should check it out - and although 'In Absentia' isn't exactly my favourite, it's definately the most metal of their albums and as such would probably appeal to you.

Spock's Beard are great. If you're looking for more metal type stuff, look for the recent output - that's 'Feel Euphoria' and 'Octane' which are both albums made since Neal Morse left the band. Before that they're more traditionally 'prog' - look out for the double album 'Snow' and 'V'.

Yeah, Prog Idol it is then. I'd watch a week long grand finale smiley - laugh.
D'yer think it'd be judged on how many time signature changes they can make in one minute? smiley - biggrin

You are most definately NOT the only person who hasn't heard of Dream Theatre! They're kind of a lesser known band. They've been around quite a while now, but I think they're just getting popular with the new interest in metal music that's surfacing in the States.

How to describe them.... smiley - erm well, they're heavy rock, so lots of loud guitars and stuff but they're also PROG-rock, so their songs tend to be long and complicated with lots of time signature changes and solos. For example, a recent DT album was double CD with the first disc containing about 5 songs and the second containing just one.

Their music is also very grand and theatrical - imagine a cross between Yes, Queen and Metallica. How about that?
