Does anyone want to share their experiences of the HHG computer game? I feel like a fool being stuck on bits of it. I'm a disgrace to lateral thinking!

The game's very difficult! I would never have got through it without hints from magazines (and my brother, but he probably read the solutions in a magazine too).

I did use lateral thinking to solve a couple of parts: the bit where I was Zaphod driving the boat, and the bit where I was Arthur and the Blugblatter Beast was trying to eat me. Most of the other problems I got stuck on.

It's been years, but wasn't there a really tricky bit where you had to get the babel fish?
I remember being stuck for ages...

Anyone out there know where I can get a copy of the game, or indeed Starship Titanic?

Starship Titanic can currently be found in PC format in the cheap re-release sections of larger computer game stores in the UK (5-10 GBP)

I got stuck on the Babel fish, too. I never got around it and eventually lost track of the game.

i still have my original game on 5 1/4" disk smiley - blush (along with buerocracy, i think, and zork smiley - ok)
a few years ago a friend of mine with access to a 5 1/4" drive made 3 1/2" copies for me, but i haven't had the opportunity to try them.

well, that's not entirely true. i'm sure i've had plenty of opportunity, but i had forgotten about them.

and yes, the babelfish was a stumper... you just never know what a towel might come in handy for smiley - winkeye

Anyone ever have the Gameboy version (as mentioned in the article)?

What was that like to play???

Post 9

Kef Schecter

There was no (official) GameBoy version of the game. What the article was saying is that there are (unofficial) Infocom interpreters that run on GameBoy, which could probably be used to play the game.

Well, okay, now I'm out of the house, but I'm working on the Babel fish. I've tried everything from screaming and yelling to catching the Babel fish with a moldy cheese sandwich.

I have no idea if the Mac version is still around, but somewhere around here is a link to the free Java version of the game, which you can play online.

Or maybe the link's not here, so I'll give it to you. (If you want hints, feel free to ask me, but I'm not very far along yet.)

I have the Java version already. One of my top 4 links on the top of my Safari at home, and hidden at work.

I was wondering if there was a Mac version I could buy or if it is freeware by now.

All text Infocom games can be downloaded for free here: http://www.latz.org/games/list_difficulty.shtml

You may need one of these to play: http://www.latz.org/infocom/index.shtml#ZIP

Over the years I had completely forgotten the existence of this little beauty. I remember playing it on an old Amstrad machine of some type about 15 years ago and whilst I got past the dreaded Babel Fish, the bugblatter beast had me stumped.

When I saw a link to a download I was there immediately. Alas it was not to be - either I'm being stupid (if so, let me know and I'll be more than happy), or else that download doesn't work with Windows XP.

Any solutions to my problem will be met with extreme gratitude and tears of joy.

They're Z-Machine Interprators; after you download the games you get these and open the game with it, then it should work just fine. (I use WinFrotz.)

If you've already done that then I don't know what you're problem is, as I use ME.

I had all my favourite 5 1/4" floppies converted to 3 1/2" disks several years ago, and somehow I've never managed to actually put one in the drive and see if it works. smiley - doh

This was one of them, along with Beurocracy and Zork...
