I have been trying to train my parents to do this fruitlessly fro years. Sigh. Without it, things will stick like glue to the surface of their frying pan.

Golden rule for frying pans after this treatment is to NEVER cook bacon in the same pan. Bacon will totally stick it up again and mean further seasoning is required.

Just to stick my oar in, this is also how to create the pefect omlette pan, except an omlette pan sould *never* be washed.

Actually the best way to clean a cast iron frying pan is to coat the interior with salt and heat it up till the salt goes brown with accumulate fat etc. Then clear off the salt, give it a rinse and dry out the pan on the hob. While still warm give it a good greaseing.

It may take time...but then again, you don't do it too often. Usually only if you've burned something past repair....or you haven't used the pan in an age.

Most of the time I just wipe any excess grease etc out with a tissue after cooking...after the pan has cooled down that is!

This is also a highly entertaining way to clean a pan as the salt will start popping everywhere! Almost as much fun as adding fairy liquid to boiling water and whatching the soapy explosion.smiley - winkeye

Zantic if you're an evil scientis in training then you must know about the stunning effects of dry-ice or (even better) liquid nitrogen in a washing up bowl (ie. detergent in water). smiley - biggrin

Bacon tastes best cooked by microwave. It's a bonus, that if you cook it that way you don't need to worry about it un-seasoning your pan.

Grilling is the way to go with bacon. You can't fry it anyway because of all the salt, white crap that comes off cheap bacon...

Nah, see Frankie...Although I agree that grilling is the only way to go.

To prevent the salt white crap coming off cheap bacon is to go to a farmers market and by the proper stuff (sez she who works in walking distance of Borough Marker where you can get smoker dry cured back bacon for rediculously small amounts of filthy lucre...teehee)

Bacon makers in the USofA are just now selling pre-nuked bacon, so cooking time in the microwave is greatly reduced, and most of the rendering has been done for you. I haven't tried it yet, I am waiting for it to come out in my favorite brands. It will be interesting to see if this product survives.

Yeah, I agree, proper bacon is a lot better - but it's also expensive and I rarely end up going to places which sell it.

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side...

conversely or perhaps perverseley I often fry my bacon in my wok smiley - erm (and no its not cheapo full of funny added stuff supermarket bacon but organic stuff I eat nowdays) smiley - erm Haveing previously been forced to do bacon in a microwave (student halls ) it is actually supprizingly good done like that, even with the cheapo supermarket rubbish (which was all I could afford most the time when in halls as a student). smiley - erm Having said which, I swear the organic bacon I buy works out cheaper: When I used to buy the supermarket stuff I'd happily do a whole pack of bacon to make a couple of sarnies, yet one pack of the expensive stuff does a good two or three meals worth smiley - weird
