A Conversation for Corsica

OK, this might be a stupid question as it's from the dim and distant past and it comes from the fact that I once read Asterix in Corsica smiley - laugh

Isn't there a traditional mafia style organised crime in Corsica - a kind of blood feud thing or something? smiley - erm

I remember reading that in that book that they tended to hide out in the Marquee (or something like that) which was mid-island vegetation where it was hard to find such people.
Anyway, in the book they were a resistance to the Roman occupation, possibly it may come from a World War II thing or whatevere.

Anyway, I'm probably just rambling...

Wondered if this was based on reality smiley - erm

There is (or was) an organisation called the Union Corse, which is a bit like the Mafia. Kidnapping was rife, but seems to have migrated to Sardinia!

Amy the Ant - High Manzanilla of the Church of the Stuffed Olive

The Maquis, perhaps? Named after the maquis - mediterranean scrubland.

It's amazing the stuff you can learn if you play close attention to Asterix and Obelix! smiley - biggrin

um, just a silly question here, but is it possible that you overlooked one of the most important historical facts? That Napoleon Bonaparte was born on Corsica?

Try rereading the second to last section of the article smiley - winkeye

I thought of suggesting that, but the Maquis was the French Resistance. I wasn't aware of their continuing existence as a criminal organisation.

DUH! Hello! Can you tell I was a bit tired yesterday? I didn't see it under "history"....and then, when it was right there in the festivals celebrated, my very tired mind didn't even make the connection.....

Some days are like that.

I always liked that one too, Orcus. Or am I thinking of another one, the one where he's tramping around in Gaul?

smiley - erm Not sure. It's the one where the romans send in a secret agent to the village. I remember it because the agents words were always in a different colour speech bubble and when he'd twisted someone to his side, their's turned the same colour. smiley - laugh Oh, and it was side splittingly funny too smiley - biggrin
