In the valley where I grew up, between Barnsley and Sheffield, we use maungy and mardy with equal vigour. However, with one important difference. While one could be maungy or have a maunge on, if you went to the noun shop for a mardy, you'd come back either maungy, or proudly carrying a maunge (albeit a mardy one) - because mardy was only ever an adjective.

How many are fully conversant with the dangers of being "Nesh"?

Oh yes, Nesh. Love that word. Although it seems to have mutated (in our family at least) to refer to anyone from outside of Yorkshire. Especially Southerners. Especially when they're being mardy. (good tie in, eh?)

Oh, and for all persons of the Yorkshire persuasion:
Happy Yorkshire Day!!

Nesh (adj):
defn. Lacking either in bodily toughness or the mental strength required to suffer in manly fashion, physically "soft" or - somtimes - squeamish, susceptible to physical harshness, predisposed to complain

Sample use:
Southerner - "Gosh, isn't it cold!"
Yorkshireman - "Yer nesh get."

oh yes...those dreaded words...

"thaart nesh thee"

meant that in reality, there were only a few more miles to go through the freezing rain, wade just two more swollen streams, and claw your way up another crumbling hillside, through that last peat bog and wait another hour for the last bus home from Fox House Inn before that revered cup of tea.

nesh?...not me surely.

Oh you must have been the other family schlepping the picnic stuff after a day building dams at Fox House!

It was always such a great day out, but without a car a real test of character getting back home again afterwards.
