Mudhooks: ,,, busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest...

Just thought I would tell you that the link to Beat Generation News is no longer working.

I had been researching Beat for something I am writing about the "children of the Beat". I came across the site on the 8th of June and was really impressed with it. I emailed the author of the site to ask some questions, didn't get an answer, and on Friday (the 13th), went to send the link to someone and it has been removed, not just missing, removed.

You can still link to it, at least for a while, from the cached page here: http://www.google.ca/search?q=cache:zAfdqS5ds0kJ:www.jackmagazine.com/beatnews/index2.html+%22beat+generation+news%22&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

It really is a shame, as it also talked about the women of the Beat generation (ie; active as writers and artists), wives and girlfriends of the "movers and shakers", and the children of the "movers and shakers". The latter are of particular interest to me, as my father was a rather minor figure in the movement (very minor), but my legacy of having a Beat father was the same as many of the other children.

Many of us were abandonned by our fathers (the Beat figures were overwhelmingly male), left to our own devices, treated with distain.... etc. Some of us weren't, of course. But a lot of us bear the emotional scars of the paternal void.

It was after reading an article in The New York Times Sunday Magazine called "Children of the Beat", that I discovered I was not alone. The article was written by Daniel Pinchbeck, son of Joyce Johnson, a Beat Writer in her own right (as well as being Jack Kerouac's one-time lover). I now had at least a partial answer to the question of why my father left three sets of children from 4 marriages, over the space of 30 years (my oldest sister is 30 years older than me, exactly).

That essay can, apparently, be found in The Rolling Stone Book of the Beats: The Beat Generation and American Culture by Holly George-Warren (Editor)
