Have you read Clacys the sum of all fears ? If not then I recomend it, it goes into a little more detail, while still skipping "some vital parts" on exactly this topic, its fiction, and the bomb does go off... read the book to find out more I'd recoment it anyone and everyone, along with his other books... I'd better not start recomending books, there are too many good ones out there smiley - winkeye but that one is at least on topic.

My only other thought along these lines is why go through the internet for info on how to build such a device, all the best places (hootoo for example smiley - winkeye) blank out important bits, when any good book store will have all the relevent texts, as published by the experts.

The description in the book is intentionally inaccurate.

I read it some time ago I recalled him mentioning skipping or altering some some stages but I wasn't certain which or if indeed it might have been both. Its not that important, just wondered if Whisky had read it, and if not thought he may be interested smiley - smiley

Yup, read it... His books are usually pretty good - His first - Hunt for Red October' was pretty close to the mark in some respects too... (In the early 1990s Izvestia - the russian newspaper even published a comparison between the book and a true life mutiny on board a Soviet Frigate, that took place sometime in the 1970s)... Hmm, maybe I should dig out that article... I've got a copy somewhere - and write it up into an entry...

Two Bit Trigger Pumping Moron

While I was reading Sum of All Fears, I went to my wife and started comparing notes. I didn't pay all that much attention during the Nuke phase of EOD school, but it didn't seem right. Then I got to the end, and all was explained.

When I was in the Army, everyone enthused about how accurate he was to the way the military was really set up. I've found that the stuff is pretty good, but he really isn't all that close on most things. He can tell a hell of a story though, and I am addicted to his Jack Ryan books. I always buy them as soon as they come out in paperback.

I don't know about the real accuracy of his detail, but it does have an edge of believability that many writters lack, I read a lot, so I have got out of the habit of buying books new, I get through 10-20 books a month, so I go to secondhand stores just to keep my book addiction affordable. Unfortunatly it means I have to wait longer for newly published books.

I'd certainly be interested in that article if you can find it again Whisky smiley - smiley (well in a translation as I'm not going to learn russion to read it smiley - biggrin)

I must admit that Clancy is a heck of a storyteller... I was amazed that he managed to continue with the series after Debt of Honour... on reading that I honestly thought he'd have to start looking for a new main character - who'd want to read about a politician... (I was wrong smiley - winkeye)

There's a movie of it now, as well.

Oh yeah the movie... I wonder how badly thrown together into an action film this one is ?

back to the books... books are always better anyway... I have to admit I've only gone as far as the bear and the dragon... but i think that is the best of them to that point, certainly it out stripped rainbow six which I felt was a bit of a let down, no real polotics to it was the problem smiley - winkeye
