What's a "golf sale"? Is it a generic term for an advertising board for any discount outlet - ie you could have "Clothes Sale", "Camping Sale" or is it an accepted and understood term in itself? Would a discount clothes shop have a "Golf Sale" board?

The GOLF SALE board was the original and most ubiquitous of them. They appeared (and still appear) in high streets all over the UK. It's entered popular culture as a result. One of the Big Brother housemates a few years ago wore a "GOLF SALE" t-shirt, for example.

(I should say that it's discounted because it's cheaply-made kit imported from the far East - you won't find pros in there or anything.)
