i apologise if im wrong, but it seems to me that 'goths' dress in their black attire and make-up etc to make a statement that they're somehow different and non-conformist, yet, it is very easy to stereotype a 'goth' because they all look the same!!.....

Actually- GOOOD point. Which the whingeing about Mansonites proves, I think, to put none too fine a point. However, given the fact that all subcultures have at least some degree of conformity and elitism- look at punk rock, a direct ancestor, and compare- it's to be expected. Alas, in addition, one couldOne thing that can be said for the subculture and it's angry, incestuous second cousin by marriage, the ebm/industrial/cyber culture, is that a fair subsect of those who consider themselves part of the group have a good, if slightly clichéd, sense of humour about it- case in point Industrial 101 or How to Be A Goth In Ten Minutes- that is lacking amongst many, say, lad/ette/s or Norwegian death metal fans . And, I must say, I believe that much of why Mansonites/quantums/high school goths revert to type so often is a combination of ignorance and alienation. Since the subculture is now widely known, the depressed and angst-filled, for lack of pop culture that speaks to them like the Smiths or true punk or blues, gravitate to Manson and NIN and the like. And, because they are widely reviled by those 'in the know', they can't branch out. I was, until recently, the only person 'in the know' among a murder of Mansonites. Instead of leaving them to their bad teen poetry and Black Sabbath, I gave them the gifts of Baudelaire and
