A Conversation for Driving Etiquette - Australia
Driving in Melbourne

One thing that has to be said about driving in Melbourne is that, it is the only place in Australia where you have to be in the right hand lane to turn left. Don't ask me why? Melbournite's, for which I used to be one, are a bit strange that way.

Turning right from the left land occurs only at some intersections in the city and is designed so that trams are not held up by cars turning right from the middle of the road!

The "box turns" make perfect sense; or did.
The grooves in the roadway in which rest the tram tracks, have a wide gap either side. If you were to get a narrow tyre stuck in the groove, then you have no choice but to follow the track (which you probably don't want to do if you're turning), or to lift the vehicle out.
Modern car tyres are a bit wider.
