In fact the Americans are closer to the correct pronunciation than us Brits given the word's origin in French.

Thinking about it, most of the words that are pronounced wrongly by us Brits are ones originating in French... Maybe there's a reason for that?

HOW COULD "US BRITS" SPELL PRONOUNCE ANY ENGLISH WRONG IF WE INVENTED THE WORDS IN FIRST PLACE. SURELY IT IS "YOU YANKS" WHO HAVE IT DEVISTATINGLY WORNG. ROWT? NO, ROUTE. ROOT. LET'S ALL SAY IT TOGETHER ROOOT

wow...i never realized that you guys said the lieutenant leftenant!!?? how weird...there's definitely no "f" in it, but whatever ...so just out of curiousity, do you guys pronounce colonel kernel???
and how exactly do you guys say zebra...zehbra??? wow, brain overload...
my whole perspective of the world just changed completely...

In gets more complicated, lieutenant is pronounced differently in the army and navy. Lef-tenant in the army and luh-tenant in the navy.
