This is a very thoughtful piece of work.
If the tables were ever turned on the US, that is that they become the host to a foreign power rather than being the invading foreign power, you would be happy to have all that weaponry to hand. The Taliban would be keen supporters of that second amendment in Afghanistan at the moment.
Sadly the truth is that a weapon rarely defends people.
The people with the will and purpose to use weapons are not, generally speaking, the law abiding ones. This leaves the law abiding people not really ready or qualified to use them which makes them even more dangerous, doesn't it?.
