This introduction on Heavy Metal is good, but I'd like to point out a few things. I think the term 'Metal' says it all and Heavy just adds to it. But that's just me 
. Also, i wouldn't consider Guns and Roses metal, but again, that's just me.
I understand you cannot include all metal genres but one metal genre which is constantly overlooked is PowerMetal. (I'm a devotee of this genre). It started out with bands like Helloween (and Judas Priest was also involved). Kai Hansen (guitarist of Helloween) also formed Gamma Ray (www.metalprovider.com/gammaray). Other Powermetal legends include Blind Guardian, Hammefall, Edguy, Avantasia, Sonata Arctica, Sinergy and the sort.
Also, metal has evolved from music to a way of life. It's general viewpoint, i believe, is 'doing what you feel is right', and ignoring anyone or anything that comes in the way (according to the circumstances). So, that's my share of points.
Nonetheless, I think this guide was a good start to explain the Heavy Metal music and its evolution. Good job, mate

i listen to Gamma Ray, Avantasia, Helloween, Maiden, Manowar, Priest, Angel Dust, Freedom Call, Within Temptation and the sort

Sounds like a man of my own tastes :D I love Maiden, Priest, Helloween and ManOwaR (you need to spell it right to be appropriately MIGHTY! )...Blind Guardian and Hammerfall kick loads of ass too. Do you know DragonForce and PowerQuest?
