I don't remember which episode it was, but the little robot was having such a hard time getting around that Tom Baker simply picks K9 up and puts him under his arm, striding out the door in his usual fashion.

Like that. And it solves the problem of bumpy groud and turning right. I think R2-D2 had similar problems.
