A Conversation for Terry Pratchett's Discworld
Does Pratchett explore the discworld enough?
kabads Started conversation Apr 19, 2001
I've read the discworld series in order and am up to Soul Music (I'm taking them slowly, having 6 months off for a while to concentrate on work and stuff).
However, something that I wish would happen more in the novels is the exploration of discworld. When I read this guide entry I agreed about the amount of detail in the world and how it's magical side can distort real things. But, in the books I normally find myself in Ankh Morpork with the watch and university, amongst other things. We did get to see countryside and stuff with the witches, but I could do with a bit more.
Don't get me wrong, I love what I'm reading and enjoy it loads, but I wish we could get around a bit more (it might be the old Tolkien bug in me still at work). Do later books get around more, or am I to expect more of the same?

Hmm, it varies - the Witches are favourite characters of Pratchett, but you'll find them visiting the cities more (such as in Masquerade). The later books are certainly very Ankh-Morpork oriented, but they're really good, so I don't mind!

we also visit XXXX, Agatean Empire, Genua, Djelibeybi, Holy Wood, Uberwald, Leshp (briefly!), Tsort, Omnia,....not 2 mention places passed through in the stories [argh no, help! escape from the stories!...eh-hem, sorry, just read witches abroad!] like the Sto Plains, Krull, Vortex Plains.. or Deaths Domain, or Hell, Dungeon Dimensions, beginning of the world and end of the world, etc...
luv a book-worm omylouse
ps- i havent included Lancre or Ankh Morpork with which you are already acquainted

Have you considered that if you are reading the books in order you are reading how pratchet himself developed the land, the further along in the order of books you get, the more developed, the larger and more varied the 'geography' becomes. Try reading them randomly!

If u r interested in the landscape i suggest u invest in a copy of The Discworld Mapp. Its generally very good, & helps u if u feel a bit 'lost' in some tales!

I knew the map existed, but am not tempted to buy it really. I'd rather that Terry started exploring more in the actual text of the books, although from the replies to this thread, it sounds like I'm going to be taken around Discworld as I read on.
As far as reading them in order, Terry recommends this himself, only because he said he develops things as he writes (like Death) and if you read in order you can see that development.

i agree. read em in order 1st. then go back & re-read them all a million times @ your leasure!
the mapp (thats how its spelt, honest!) only really shows places that r visitd/mentiond in d books...+ (i think) a few places added on where the map lookd bare!

If you prefer those not set in A-M, read Interesting Times (set in the Agatean Empire), The Last Continent (XXXX) and The Fifth Elephant (Uberwald). If you'd like more of the witches, theres Maskerade (though this is in A-M) and Carpe Jugulum (Lancre). One reason why most of the books are in A-M, though, is that most fans love the Watch and Rincewind.

i luv Jingo. it contains the watch & isnt set completely in A-M.(Fifth Elephant's also good 4 same reason + a load others).
i esp like the bit (in Jingo) wen Vimes gets offered the eyeball! hee hee!

Good to have all these replies - thanks Lords and Ladies. I do like the AM novels, especially the Watch, but I just wondered whether Pterry got about as much as I'd hoped. Going by this thread, he does, so I'm happy!

You know, Dwarfs, have decided to become more original. For instance, did you realise that Dwarfish songwriters recently invented a revolutionary new technique : Par example
Gold, gold, gold, gold,
Gold, gold, gold, gold,
Gold, gold, gold, gold,
Gold, gold, gold, IRON!
This is the beginning of something very new, although the writer who suggested :
Zinc, Sil-ver,Zin, Tin,
Plat'num, Merc'ry,
GoldgoldGOLD!
Was shouted down for being far too revolutionary
