Is the Newtown Leagues Club still open for drinkers?
I suppose I am showing my age by admitting to remembering when Newtown sported a first division rugby league team which I used to follow in the late 60s.

The building still exists but it is now the (can't remember the nationality) community club
There is actually a big Newtown re-union this weekend - they still play in first division - including players from the 81 grand final team. No doubt a big day to be had by all but i will be playing rugby so won't be able to make it........

In the late 60s I had a flat in Marrickville. All the other residents of the large block of flats were relatively newly arrived Italian migrants who thought the (then recently released) classic Aus movie "They're A Weird Mob" was brilliant.
When I followed Newtown they were in the top grade with Manly, St George etc. What do you mean by "they still play in first division"? Is that the next grade down from the current Premier league which Auckland will probably win this season?
What grade rugby do you play?

Marrickville is still a very mixed place ethnically, makes for good restaurants
Yeah, Newtown pretty much went broke in the mid eighties (i think thats why they had to sell the club) and now they play in the Metro cup which is just a local Sydney comp. A few of the 1st division clubs play their reserve grade teams in the comp as well. In fact i think some of the Auckland reserve graders actually fly over and play for Newtown every week.
As for me, i play for Petersham who are a 3rd division subbies team. Sydney rugby has grade or district teams ie: Gordon, Randwick etc where the super 12 players would play if they were ever there (similar to Ponsonby etc in Auckland) then there are about 7 divisions of sub-district (subbies)comps.
We have 5 grades and i will be playing 1st grade this week. Something to do with age and cunning beating youth and enthusiasm.......

I can smell the linament. Wait, what's that I hear? An ambulance with an old bloke in the back. Surely not.
