It has been found that garlic crushed, mixed with water to make a paste and painted round plants, forms a very effective deterrent for slugs and snails. Oh, and crushed eggshells don't work, so I'm not sure that hair clippings would.

I didn't really get the thing about hair clippings either. Although I bet they'd stick to the slug in a way that crushed eggshells don't. It's hard enough to get all the bits of hair off neck and shoulders after a hair cut, without having smile to make it sticky as well.
Hadn't heard about the garlic though. I might try that one.
