I've been reading Monty Don again!
He says that:
By growing fairly large batches of lettuce, in blocks, you will virtually saturate the slug larder - the lettuces will grow faster than the slugs can consume them, provided that you grow them initially in a slug-free zone, such as a cold frame or a greenhouse, and plant them out when they're growing strongly.
