A Conversation for Tibet - Why the Chinese are There

Why do we need to worry about what he said in 1987?
He's now on very public record in the world media, in the light of what's been going on in Tibet, as saying that greater autonomy rather than outright independence is what Tibet needs.

"there is a distinctive culture in Tibet, their own language and writing system"
China has 56 ethnics, god, they are all different to each other in languages and some of them even has their own writing system.. How can you didvide them into 56 parts..??

"Why do we need to worry about what he said in 1987?"
I mean he is not consistent in his wording. You can not trust such a polictial metempsychosis.

They have their own culture, they want more autonomy, can't they have it if they want it? Why not?
The USA has 50 states, and they have their own state legislatures, with different laws in different states, some states having the death penalty and others not.
The EU is a union the cooperates at certain levels but has independent states within it.
Queen Elizabeth is the Head of State of Australia, Canada, the UK, Jamaica and I don't know how many other independent countries.
There are many ways of approaching this problem.
Ignoring the problem, crushing the Tibetans into submission and dismissing their demands is not the best.

Well, he's come out in front of the media of the whole world and said it. People do modify their views with time, especially after twenty or more years.

Thanks, I appreciate that because you, seems to me, you want to help Chinese. WG. But you know, in existing system, under frame of the constitution of China, the problem should be solved in this way, rather to instigate Tibetan to make riots..

Yes. But what if people want to practise their religion?
Should the state have a say in how they do that?
Should people be sent to prison for holding religious meetings in their homes (eg. prayer meetings/bible studies)?

You say this shouldnt happen but this is precisely what the communist government is doing in China up to this day. If people want to go to a christian meeting they have to go to the 3 self church where some of the key doctrines are not allowed to be taught because the government says so.

Blimey, there's been a lot of posts since 5pm last night. I'm going to have to respond 1 post at a time, which will be a little annoying. Bear with me.
>>Tibet was not, and is not an independent country<<
Wrong. Tibet has been independent numerous times, and its most recent period ended in 1949 with invasion by the People's Army. It's universally acknowledged that China at one time paid tribute to Lhasa, and that Tibetan troops once helped fend off a Mongol invasion of northern China.
If you have been told different, you have been lied to.

HonestIago Posted Apr 5, 2008
>>But it is an ideal, in real life, the laws (no matter in UK or in CHina) sometimes are a lttle complicated to follow.<<
No, in the UK the laws are pretty simple to follow. Plus, we have the option of changing out laws if we feel they are unfair or immoral.

HonestIago Posted Apr 5, 2008
>>But please note this has never been acknowledged by any central government of China.<<
That doesn't matter - China doesn't recognise Kosovo's independence, not does Serbia. Kosovo is still independent.
Another example is that fact that the monarchs of the UK continued to claim they were the kings and queens of France until 1703 - centuries after the last English possesion in France was lost. It doesn't matter what the English kings and queens thought - they weren't the kings and queens of France.

Whoops, missed this one.
>>Only because, these slaves masters and aristocrates whan to chase their lost power of ruling and dream of their lost heavens<<
Most of the old Tibetan aristocracy by the late 1950s had been ether killed, fled to India or taken away to the maotai (Chinese gulags). The rebellions were led by ordinary people who felt outraged that their country had been taken from them.
>>The slogan was changed to this so called autonomy<<
So they moderated their demands. Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
>>which is ignoring the human rights who live in Tibet<<
Always entertaining to hear a supporter of the Chinese government talk about human rights, as if the Chinese government has any understanding of human rights.

you don't know Chinese idea at all! We think in different way, so it is unnecessary for you to be puzzled! Just like you don't want Northern Ireland and Scotland to be independent, we will never permit Tibet or Taiwang to be independent! As Chinese, in fact, we are more reluctant to see that our country is seperated! Support any action of our government in Tibet for unification firmly! We will never give in to your biased pressure! To see how your media distort what happened in Tibet! www.anti-cnn.com
We are very disapponted with biased report on Tibet of BBC and other famous foreign media. We won't believe them any more! You will be responsible for your biased reports! You will lose Chinese audiences!

Just to jump in here, out of interest, how do you know that the Chinese government reports are not biased? The media in the UK is free to report what it wants.

>>"Just like you don't want Northern Ireland and Scotland to be independent"<<
Ah, but this is the point, while I think we'd be disappointed if the people there did choose independence, if they really want it then they can have it. Its just a matter of voting in sufficient numbers.
In the meantime, Scotland and Northern Ireland both have their own parliaments which gives them a great deal of autonomy.
Key: Complain about this post
