An explanation for "the worm": originally, the worm was added by people who distilled their own mezcal: if the worm dissolved, there was not enough alcohol in it. The stories about the mind-altering effects were "invented" later.
This is also the reason there's no worm in 100% agave Tequila: it's not necessary.

There should never be a worm in tequila, unless it is sold to tourists or exported to the USofA. However, the worm (a grub of an insect that lives on the blue agave) is used in Mezcal. In particular the Mezcal produced in the area surrounding Monta Alban, Oaxaca. The worm indicates that the Agave used was blue agave. Some Mezcals are much better than the average Tequila, Myarticls on Mezcal was rejected because there was already an article on Tequila and the fact that it contains information not in the Tequila article was ignored

Last time I suggested that, h2g2 was brought up by the bbc, I'll try to avoid thinking about it again.

I don't see why another article about Mezcal would not be interesting. It is different, and there are other stories to tell. It won't disslove worms however.

Now I'm really curious: what is it about mezcal that seems to get it "nixed"?
First there was the refusal of the entry, now a posing has disappeared...

Mezcal is actually made from a different agave than Tequila, and it is a completely different drink, some time many orders of magnitude stonger %-)

Yes, it can be made from other agave. It is often cropped with more of the leaf on the "pineapple" unlike tequila that is clipped close to the core. This gives some mezcals a harsher flavour (or more spicy flavour). Some of the white "country" (moonshine) tequila I have tried in N. Mexico is very pure tasting liquor - some of it is watered down (and also dirt cheap). The others like the Oaxacan style aged a bit is a lot different. I think an article is in order .. I probably don't have time to write it - be my guest!
