A Conversation for Potato Crisps - A History

Tortilla Chips

Steve K.

Potato chips are way up there on my list of guilty pleasures. I can do without sweet stuff, but greasy, salty, carbs ... smiley - drool

Still, the fat & salt are not good, so what to do? One thing my wife & I have discovered is simply baking tortillas. A 4 - 5 lb bag of about 100 low fat corn tortillas (maybe 5" diameter), costs about $1.50, and makes several large bags of chips (we cut them into strips first). The commercial tortilla chips would cost 5 - 10x as much, and probably have way more fat & salt (yes, there are baked ones, and they are really expensive).

Great with picante sauce ... which is mostly healthy smiley - tomato

Good idea Steve, I'm always looking for a healthier alternative, coz I'm a serious crisp junkie smiley - drool, there is seldom a day when we don't have crisps in the cupboard - the hard part is keeping them in the cupboard.smiley - crisps

You can make (fairly) healthy crisps another way:

*Slice thinly or peel strips with a peeler.
*spray with low-fat oil spray
*Nuke 'em til crispy in the microwave.

They are yummy smiley - smiley

No problem Fizzymouse! Hope it goes well. You may find you need a few goes to get it right (I did). Shame eh? How will you eat the experimental batches?
